Italian Fencers win first medal at 2011 European Championships: Fencing News
The first day of the 2011 European Fencing Championship featured first medal for the Italian Foil Paralympic fencer, Loredana Trigilia, as she won bronze medal in the Women’s Foil A Category competition.
The National Paralympic Coach, Fabio Giovannini, gave his comments on that victory, "It 'a historic medal because it is the first that comes after the passage of the CIP field Paralympic the Italian Fencing Federation. It’s a result that rewards the sacrifice
of the CIP and the Federation as well as athletes who now have greater growth opportunities and training, also joined with Olympic athletes."
The Foil Paralympic fencer, Trigilia, started her first day at the 2011 European Fencing Championship with the pool matches. With only one loss and four wins, she entered into the direct elimination round in the table of 16. Trigilia faced the Russian A
Category Fencer, Cherviakova, in the table of 16. After socring a victory by 15-6, Trigilia advanced to the quarter-final round, where she faced Hungarian, Magyar Juhasz. The quart-final bout was not also so difficult for Trigilia, as she beat her with another
remarkable 10 points’ lead of 15-5.
Trigilia could not survive in the semi-final round and was defeated by another Hungarian fencer, Krajnyak with 9-15 touches. She was ranked third in the competition’s rankings and was honoured with a bronze medal. It was the first medal for the Italian squad
that was taken by a Paralympian. The Women’s Foil Category 'A' event was won by the Hungarian, Krajnyak, who finished her event in the first spot.
Trigilia gave her comments on bronze medal victory. She told that she was very happy and excited on her achievement. She said that although, her start was not so good and she was much tensed. But she recovered soon and pulled out her grit and character and
finally she was won the bronze medal in her hand that was of great worth for her.
The second day will comprise of Men’s Foil event in the able-bodied fencing and it will be interesting to see who will keep up to the momentum of the game.
