Italian MC-Carnaghi hammers German Schweriner SC in league round – Women’s Volleyball
The thrilling volleyball action of 2012 CEV Women’s Champions League resumed on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 after a break of almost three weeks.
In Pool A, the German Schweriner SC hosted Italy’s top women’s club team, the MC-Carnaghi Villa Cortese. The visiting team staged an eye-catching action on the net and embarrassed the German players in front of their fans. Italian ladies posted 25-21, 25-22,
25-17 on board and finished the match in straight sets. Around 1,520 spectators witnessed the match and most of them were Schweriner supporters.
Sara Pavan of MC-Carnaghi topped all the scorers with match-high 18 points, while her teammate Aurea Cruz added 15 points and remained second-best on the top scorer’s list. Germany’s Patricia Thormann put up valiant effort and contributed team-high 14 points.
None of the rest of players from both teams could go into double digit scores.
The winning head coach, Marcello Abbondanza of Italy, was satisfied with the great performance of his team. He appreciated the combined effort of all his players and congratulated them for victory.
On the other hand, SCHWERINER SC head coach Teun Buijs was not in the best of mood after losing the important match. He disclosed his thoughts in the following manner, “We lacked a great deal of self-confidence and concentration tonight. Except for the second
set, we never found our rhythm and clearly VILLA CORTESE deserved the victory.”
The start of the match was not very great as both teams played with certain degree of nervousness. The home team got better and picked up an early lead of 6-4 but Villa Cortese hit the equaliser at 7-all. Germany’s Thormann and Italy’s Cruz came into stride
and displayed wonderful game. The game of hit ‘n’ run continued and visiting team managed to stretch the gap of points. They pushed the Germans behind and claimed opening set, 25-21.
The raged-up Germans hit back strongly in the following set and scored consecutive points. Villa Cortese played in its usual style and gradually picked up pace. They came from back row attack and went up on the scoreboard.
German ladies struggled and tied the score at 17-17. Nevertheless, Italians were all up to extend their lead by winning second set. They proved to be better and snatched another set from hosts by posting 25-22.
In the third set, Germans’ hope to win died as VILLA CORTESE dominated the whole way with easy points. Schwerin became irresistible and dropped third set, 25-17. Italy clinched success in straight sets and celebrated the victory.
The Italian team will return to action in the next week when they will meet RC Cannes of France on Tuesday, January 17. Likewise, the Germans will play their next match against Eczacibasi Vitra Istanbul on the same day.
