Italian Raphael Marzani wins bronze medal in 2011 Universiade Games in Shenzhen – Fencing Update
The second day of competition at 2011 Universiade Games was comprised of the second medal for Blue fencers. The Italian Raphael Marzani won the bronze medal in the Men’s Epee Individual contest on the second day August 14.
Raphael featured victory in the table of 16 over the Russian fencer, Morgoev with the score of 15-13. In the quarter-final round, the Blue overcame Andrea Cipriani after the tough competition of 15-12 score-line.
In the semi-final, Blue team could not continue and was stopped by France’s Virgile Marchal. The French fighter attained the score of 15 in the loss of 11 touches against him and qualified for the final bout. Later on Marchal lost his final bout to Hungarian
Peter Szenyi. Raphael finished at third in the competition and was crowned with bronze medal. French Marchal was awarded the silver medal with second standings in the competition. The Hungarian Peter was honoured with gold medal and was placed first in the
Epee contest.
 In addition, the Blue squad was also seen in the Epee contests on the best places. Cipriani secured fifth place in the competition, while Gabriele Bino stayed in the hands of the board of the 32. Portuguese Cordeiro amazingly won his bout by a score of
15-13. He stopped in the 32 when he was beaten by the Spaniard Lorenzo Bruttini Rosello with 15-14 touches.
In the women's foil contest, the race of blue foxes Martina Batini and Alice Volpi stopped in the quarter. Batini, in the first 16 and then 32, had passed with the minimum against French Genevois with 13-12 touches and against the Korean Hong with the score
of 15-14, while Volpi had defeated the South Korean Choin 32 and the United States Ambika Singh with a score of 15-12. The two in fact, did not get on the podium but were eliminated in the quarter-final. Russian Julia Birjyukova defeated Batini, while Russian
Kamilla Gafurzianova defeated Volpi in the quarter-final.
