Italian Serie A – Full Time review: Fiorentina versus Cagliari (Part 2)
From the 65th minute onwards, Cagliari played their way back into the match mostly because Fiorentina cooled off a bit. The visitors kept control of the ball and their dominance paid off as in the 70thminute
Cossu found himself in space inside the Fiorentina penalty area but Boruc was at hand to save his team’s one goal lead as he palmed Cossu’s shot away for a corner kick.
However, quite remarkably against the run of play Donadel scored in the 77thminute for Fiorentina as his goal took the score line to 2-0 in favour of the home side. The midfielder intercepted a pass near the half way line and
then proceeded onwards to take a brilliant shot on target which whizzed past Agazzi. It was an awesome goal which was rightly applauded by every fan in the stadium but quite astonishingly the referee disallowed it as the ball took a deflection off Zanetti
on route to goal, unfortuantely the Italian was in an offside position. In the 79thminute, Fiorentina made a substitution as Pasqual was replaced by Piccini. Before that, in the 73rd minute, D’Agostino was replaced by Zanetti
from the Viola bench.
In the 81st minute, Vargas played the ball in for Ljajic but the winger played in Mutu who slotted it past Agazzi. However, the linesman on the far side disallowed the goal by raising his flag for an offside as
it seemed that the Romanian was in an offside position when he made contact with the ball. In the 84th minute, Cagliari made their change as Ragaztu came on for Cossu.
The likes of Mutu and Ljajic who were fantastic in the first half already kept up their energy levels in the second half as Santana dictated traffic from the centre of the park. In the 87th minute, Ljajic came off
slowly for Bolatti; the winger tried his best to waste time by walking ever so slowly towards the touch line. Soon after, Boruc was booked by the referee for time wasting in the 89th minute. It was a shameful act by the goalkeeper who
tried to rub salt into the Cagliari wounds with his actions.
In the 92nd minute, Vargas had a chance to make it 2-0 to Fiorentina as he was put clean through on the Cagliari goal by Santana. However, the striker wasted his glorious chance to get in on the goal scoring action
as Agazzi blitzed forward from his goal line and saved the shot with his legs. Regardless, at the final whistle Fiorentina finally secured a 1-0 win over Cagliari, they thoroughly outplayed the visitors as Mutu displayed clinical finishing netting the only
goal of the match.
