Italian Team clutches silver medal on fourth day of 2011 Universiade Games Shenzhen

On the fourth day of competition, the Blue Squad captured fourth medal for Fencing at the Universiade 2011 in Shenzhen. The Blue team clutched the silver medal in the Men’s Sabre Team contest on the fourth day of Universiade Fencing Championships on August
16.
The Sabre Team event was conquered by the Ukrainian Squad who beaten the Blues in the playoff. Total eleven teams, including top teams like Russia, United States, France, Hungary, Italy and Ukraine, participated in the fourth day’s Sabre contest.
Starting with the Direct Elimination Tables, both Italian and Ukrainian squad was given an automatic by in the table of 16. The Italian squad including Massimiliano Murolo, who had already won bronze in the individual event, Stefano Sbragia, Tricarico Marco
and Luigi Miracco faced Spain in the quarter-final. Overtaking Spanish athletes in the quart-final with the score of 45-40, the Blues qualified for the semi-final round where they faced South Korean. The four blue, who had intrigued the Chinese press had reached
the final with a victory in the semi-finals on the tough South Korea by a score of 45-42.
They further advanced to the final round against Ukraine. The Blue could not stand against Ukrainian fighters and dropped in the score-line of 45-31 touches. Still the performance of Luigi Miracco could not be denied who, despite a sprained right ankle,
had strongly backed up the strip, giving a hand to team-mates.
Ukraine received the gold medal on the fourth day of competitions with first standing while Italy was awarded the second place with silver medal in the Sabre Team contest. The Bronze medal fight was taken place between France and Korea that was amazingly
taken by the Korean squad with the 45-37 score-line.
Women’s Epee Team contest was also conducted on the fourth day of Universiade Championships. The Epee contest was captured by the French female Fencing Squad who defeated United States in the final with the score of 45-39. Italy was placed fifth in the competition.
