Italian Team wins the sword of Cuba World Cup of Men’s Foil Team in Havana
After the gracious gold medal victory in Men’s Foil Individual in Cuba World Cup, the Italian team took the sword of Cuba World Cup by winning the gold medal in Men’s Foil Team as well. The Team competition took place today in Havana, Cuba.
The International Federation of Fencing, Fédération Internationale d'Escrime, conducts, every year, Foil World Cup, namely Cuba World Cup, both in Individual and Team category. This year, Cuba World Cup started on June 18, in which 21 teams including 160
fencers participated in the competition. The Individual competition started on June 18, while Team competition started on June 19. Team competition started with pool matches, where sixteen teams qualified for direct elimination tables.
After winning all the pool matches, the Italian team members, including Cuban gold medallist, Andrea Cassara, Andrea Baldini, Valerio Aspromonte and George Avola started with the table of 16 where they faced Canada. They started theirnjourney towards the
quarter-final by defeating Canada with a score of 45-24. In quarter-final, the Italian dropped Great Britain team with 45-29 touches. A powerful bout was played against Russia in semi-finals, which was taken by The Blues with seven points lead in total 45
touches.
Italian fencers were able to get the gold medal after beating Japan in the final round with same seven points lead of 45-38 score-line. This was an amazing victory by the Blue team in Cuba World Cup, as they owned the whole Cuba Foil event by winning individual
and team gold medals.
The coach, Stephen Wen, said on the victory,” "Even today, the guys have offered an excellent performance, in fact all four have proved their value and confirms its world leadership. As in the women's field, I can say that we have to be certified, for all
the opponents to beat. Now all this must be confirmed on the platforms of the Europeans in Sheffield and in October in Catania for the World Cup.”
The Individual event was taken by the Blue, Andrea Cassara yesterday. He had won three gold medals consecutively in the Cuba World Cup.
