Italian Women win at 2011 FIVB World Cup – Volleyball News
The elite volleyball competition, the 2011 FIVB World Cup, is underway in Japan as the event took centre stage this past Friday, November 4, and covered the first two rounds on November 9. A total of 12 teams from around the world showed up for the tournament.
During the two round’s game, Italy was always in the hot seat. Team Italia worked out a phenomenal game and let no other team hinder its performance. They finished the second round with a win against Algeria and remained undefeated.
Italy joined the 2011 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Cup as a wild-card entry and made good use of the opportunity. According to the set competition formula, teams were divided into two groups and Italy was placed in group 1. They started the campaign along
with China, Algeria, Dominican Republic, and host Japan on November 4.
Italian ladies were challenged by pumped-up home-team of Japan on the opening day of the tournament. The Japanese had stupendous support of the local fans and tried to take advantage of the familiar conditions. However, Italy presented a nice show of volleyball
and managed to dismantle the power of the hosts in 4-set game. The home team could only capture one set in the whole match, while Italians bagged first victory of the tournament.
Using the confidence of the first win, Italy put up against resilient China in the second match of competition on the very next day. The match-up tried Italy’s patience as China gave a tough competition. The match spanned over five sets and saw many ups
and down. It was a see-saw battle in the first four sets but Italy made the difference by winning 15-point golden set. China put up a valiant effort but Italy was destined to win the match.
Taking the next step, the Italian squad launched authority over the weak opponents from Dominican Republic. They had an easy time beating Dominican Republic in straight sets. It was only the first set, where Dominican Republic staged a bit of resistance
but remained unimpressive in the next two sets. Italy finished the first round of the competition with an outstanding result of 3-0.
Following a terrific performance in the first round, Italy took a great start in the second round. They faced off Argentina, which also qualified for the competition via wildcard. The team south americans failed to match the performance of the Italian side
and dropped all three sets of the game.
Finally, the winning team finished the second round of the FIVB World Cup by taking on Algeria. The African team was no threat for Italy and they easily accepted the better status of their strong opponents. Now Italy is the only team without any loss in
the first two rounds of 2011 FIVB World Cup. They appeared in five matches and accumulated 14 points.
Third round of the 2011 FIVB Women’s World Cup is scheduled to be opened on Friday, November 11 and Italy will open against South Korea. The Koreans captured only one match in the previous two rounds and do not pose any threat for charged-up Italians. It
is expected that Italy will finish the match in straight sets.
