Question:

Italian fashion?

I'm going to be living in Italy for a year and was wondering what they wore. I know that most Italians are very fashionable, so what types of things do they wear? Please don't suggest any designers like Gucci or Prada or whatever because there is no way I can afford that. I heard they don't wear jeans much there, and usually never wear shorts and flip flops unless they are going to the beach. So, any style tips would be appreciated! Thanks!

p.s. Just so you know, I don't plan on re-doing my whole woredrobe or anything, just making some slight changes. Oh, and if it helps to know what part of Italy I'll be in it is Rome. Thanks again!

  1. just been to italy.all the locals were wearing bright colours(tutti frutti,my partner said!)orange, green, yellow, pink.also lots of denim and silver.saying that it was sorrento,a seaside town,so i imagine it would be quite different in rome.they are always very stylish.

  2. lots of black like NYC, i love Italy been many times! not flashy bold colours.

  3. Most of the people in Rome are tourists, so what do you care.  If you cannot keep up with the flashy Italian ladies with their huge bags that match their shoes and their hair, wear what you are comfortable with.--that's all.  When you get there you can find your way around the shops that have special sales.

    Boaz.

  4. We travel to Italy nearly every year and I have never felt that I was dressed inappropriately, despite the fact that all my stuff is packed in a carry-on size bag: http://www.thetravelzine.com/friend.htm

A word of warning to you.  Italy is cracking down on people who buy fake designer goods so don't do it, it might be very expensive in the long run.  Read this article: http://www.euroconsumatori.org/16856v168...

    Hope that helps!

  5. Gucci, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Missoni, Max Mara, Valentino, Armani, Ferrè, Biagiotti, Tod's and Hogan, Ferragamo, g*y Mattiolo, etc

  6. Most Italians cannot afford those big designers either.  If an Italian is going outside of their home, they are dressed up, like going to church.  Women usually wear skirts, but pantsuits are becoming more common.  No bright colors, like lime or orange... Stick with classic colors, grey, brown, black, white.. tailored and classis looking styles and you will fit right in.  They are all slim and beautifully dressed.

  7. don't buy anything new, wait until you're over there

I went last in 2000 and bought a $15 designer dress made of woven metal that everybody still envies me for...

look on the outskirts of Rome for unknown designers

out of the wardrobe that you have now, pick simple colors: everything you own that is black or single-colored

if you have, bring shoes and bag that match, if not, buy them there, not here

shorts are ok, as long as they're shapely, not baggy (goes for all clothes), don't bring PJs, unless you want to sleep in them: outside your bedroom people will find them funny

one more: most great old buildings are churches, you need to cover your arms and legs to go inside: no miniskirts in church

  8. I'm Italian... don't worry, you don't need to wear Gucci,Armani etc.. is too much expensive here too... jeans are fully used!!

it's true, shorts are not used unless you are going to the beach..

you know, we can understand if you are not Italian by dresses, generally strangers in Italy wear shorts and t-shirt really stained, hat..

the better thing is come in Italy, watch the fashion of the moment and buying something here, has no sense buy in America..fashion is really different!

but don't worry too much, if you wear jeans and a shirt white or black you are fine!

in summer, instead, you can wear bright colours...
