Italian rider Sacha Modolo wins first stage of Tour of Denmark 2011 - Cycling News
Colnago - CSF Inox team’s Sacha Modolo took the biggest victory of his young career in the opening stage of Tour of Denmark 2011 in Esbjerg on Wednesday, August 3.
The 24-year-old Italian racing cyclists proved the fastest from the other cyclists and easily beat Matti Breschel of Rabobank and Michael Morkov of Saxo Bank to took his overall victory. He took the total of 3 hours, 59 minutes and 21 seconds to cover the
distance of 175 kilometres.
After break from cancer the Geox-TMC team’s Daniele Colli returned to race and showed his good effort and grabbed fourth place with the same timing of the Italian. Although, the last three years winner Jakob Fuglsang of Leopard Trek faced a puncture in the
last kilometre and secured 51st place with the difference of 1 minute and 34 seconds.
After finishing the stage Bettini told the media, "This will have the look of the future. We will have some very young talented riders, like Modolo, as well as experienced riders like Luca Paolini. This will give everyone very strong motivation for the race.”
Patrick Clausen (Denmark), Nikola Aistrup (Team Concordia Forsikring - Himmerland), Alessandro Bazzana (Team Type 1 - Sanofi) and Rene Jorgensen (Christina Watches-Ofone) made an early breakaway.
Before the race curved into the wind the peloton allowed the breakaway riders to build an advantage of six minutes over the peloton but all of them began to lose the pace. Bazzana took the overall KOM of the day with 10 points ahead of Nikola Aistrup.
Boven said, "The difference at the line was decisive, so it is ok, you can't have a better one. But that's Oscar. He acts for and thinks about the team. We decided with him that this week he will also get to choose his ride.”
Zico Waeytens took the title of best young rider ahead of Tomas Alberio while Rene Jorgensen took the title of most aggressive rider ahead of Nikola Aistrup. He put in a brilliant effort and showed his aggression during the race.
Modolo took the overall lead with the timing of 3 hours, 59 minutes and 11 seconds while Morkov was runner-up with 3 seconds and Matti Breschel was in third place with 4 seconds behind the Italian.
Recently, Modolo took second place in Ronde van Drenthe and also grabbed second place in first stage and third place in fourth stage and fifth stage of Tour of Qinghai Lake.
The next stage will start in Grindsted and ended in Århus. All the cyclists will cover the distance of 189 kilometres.
