Italian volleyball club team Spes Conegliano shuts down – Women’s Volleyball
The Conegliano based Italian women’s volleyball club team Spes Conegliano recently faced a lot of financial issues, which led the team to the edge of the cliff.
The team management finally decided to shutdown the club due to the lack of funds. Spes Conegliano, which featured players such as American Kristin Richards and 2001 European Championship silver medallist Kathleen Weiss from Germany, was one of the active
members of Italian National League.
In their last match against Scavolini Pesaro in December 2011, Spes Conegliano staged a great fight. The match spanned over five sets and eventually ended up in Conegliano’s favour.
Apparently, it was the height of pride for team members of Spes Conegliano after beating a tough rival but it proved to be the last win by Spes. In the next run, the team was scheduled to take on Cariparma SiGrade Parma but it never happened as the team
management failed to pay any fees to the athletes.
The Chairman of the Spes Conegliano, Giovanni Lucchetta, said that after 10 years of work, Conegliano’ s sporting venture in series A is over. He further added that when something does not hold out anymore, you must take note of it and shut it down.
He said, “Spes’ project was founded upon writing a page in Conegliano’s sporting history and upon doing it in an indelible way. We’ve managed to do this, since we took the team to the series A and, for some weeks, it was even first. This way we’ve also created
the conditions to complete the construction of the Arena. In particular, the Arena is a building that Conegliano will have forever.”
He held himself responsible for the lack of funds and shutdown of the team. He said that he may not have been the right person to achieve success in this venture. The chairman admitted that he made some mistakes, which turned out to be insurmountable.
This clearly shows that the shutdown is completely due to the economic crisis and failure to generate enough money for the team to function.
