  1. the one that you described seems to be an "osteria". anyway, in this places usually you'll find regional and local food, so this means that every city you'll find something different. I live in the north of Italy and the typical dishes that you'll find in an "osteria" are "stracotto d'asino" (donkey) and "trippa" (the stomach of the cow). but I'm sure that if you'll go to south, you'll find more fish. there are lot of old men that stay there the whole day, drinking and playing cards.

the enoteca is the place where you can taste lots of different wines: usually in this places you don't eat a lot but just some "affettati" (salami, ham...) and "bruschette".

the "tavola calda" is a kind of restaurant, usually not big and owned by a family. you can eat local food as in the osteria but it's usually a place for families, where you eat and then go out and don't stay there for too long.

  2. Osteria is the name of that 'piccolo ristorante a buon mercato'. The name derives from 'to host' (ospitare), (hotel, hostel). You can easily find in the villages or suburbs.

    Nora's answer is good.

  3. Hi... i'm italian

An "enoteca" is a restaurant but much more a shop who sells wine.

An "osteria" is a restaurant with local and tipical food and you can drink wine and another kind of drinks.

A "tavola calda" is a sort of fast food you can eat pizzas or sandwitches tp take away or to eat not al the table. the expressions means "hot table"!:-)

The kind of restuarant like this:

"un tipo di ristorante a buon mercato, in cui originariamente gli uomini andavano a bere vino e giocare a carte?"

    is a OSTERIA.

In ancient times the poor people goes to osterias to eat some  simple food, to eat wine and to play!
