Italians win silver and bronze in Sabre of 5th CISM Military World Games 2011 – Fencing News
The last day of the 5th CISM Military World Games 2011 featured a silver and bronze medal for the Blue fencers on July 24 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Blue Men’s Sabre team clutched silver medal while the Women’s Sabre team grabbed the bronze medal in the 5th CISM Military World Games.
Total of four fencing events including Epee and Sabre team events in both male and female were conducted on the last day of the championships. The Blue fencing squad won two bronze medal and one silver medal in these contests. Furthermore, the blue team
amazingly secured top five places in all four competitions.
In the Men’s Sabre Team competition, a total of 14 nations participated. The teams started with their pool matches. The Blue squad took the victory in all the bouts of their pool matches and started direct elimination table with quarter-final round. They
faced the Ukrainian team in the quarter-final bout and took their first table victory with 18 points lead in the 45-27 score-line. Keeping their momentum high, the Blue squad faced Germany in the semi-final bout and dropped them with 45-37 touches. They lost
their final bout from the Korean team and finished with silver medal and second place in the competition.
The Women’s Sabre team clutched the bronze medal in the Women’s competition. Eight teams including China, Italy, Poland, Ukraine, Canada, Colombia, Brazil and Venezuela participated in the Sabre contest. Italy and Poland gained an impressive starting victory
in the direct elimination table bout. Italy dropped Colombia with excellent 45-9 touches while the Polish dropped Brazil with a little loss of seven touches against them in the 45-7 score-line. In the semi-final bout the Chinese dropped the Blue squad with
45-32 touches and faced Poland in the final. The Italians fought the bronze medal fight with Venezuela and dropped them with the score of 45-32.
In Men’s Epee team contest, the Italian squad was dropped by Switzerland in the quarter-final and they finished in fifth place in the competition. The Women’s Epee team finished their competition with a bronze medal and third place in the event’s rankings.
