  2. Hello,

The pantheon was a roman temple dedicated to all the Gods.  It has a triangular pediment supported by 16 columns that are shorter than originally called for.  The dome is set on a circular base.  The dome is as high as it is wide at 142 feet from floor to rooftop and from side to side.  At the base the dome measures 23 feet thick but gradually thins as the walls get higher.  This lessens the weight of the dome.  The dome is made of concrete made from lightweight volcanic rock while the base is made of heavier travertine concrete.  The ceiling is coffered as another way to reduce the weight of the dome.  The opening, or oculus, is 30 feet in diameter and is the only source of light and air in the building.  Because rain also enter through the oculus, the floor has holes in it and slants toward the edges to let the rainwater drain.
