Italy Advise...one of many?

Question

I am going to Italy in 2 weeks, I am 15, and I am living with a host family. They live a few miles outside of Milan. I will be there as an exchange student for about 10 months.

Among many other things, I am wondering about dating Italian guys. Is it true that it is custom to cheat? Are they going to expect anything different from me because I'm American? ect...

Any advise is helpful, including something I didn't mention to ask.

Italian guys are known as cheaters and with their smoothy talk. I think that they will find you an easy target as you don't know the language well yet, so just be careful the first few weeks and check out if a guy really likes you.

I lived in italy.  My advise for you would be.  Watch a popular american movie...see the girls.  that is what they think we are like.

Beware. My italian professor said that they can be a little "attached". say if you give off the wrong vibe, they may think that they like you. do beware of the guys that hit on you, or you hit on. some do have girlfriends even though they hit on you and their girlfriends won't be scared to tell you to stay away from their man or give you an evil glance. Came back from studying abroad, so I know.

Italians tan more than Americans, so they may look older.

I would say, don't focus too much about dating them, try to enjoy the country and the people.

My boyfriend is a nice looking Italian living in Italy, and I, live in the usa. I believe how they treat relationships mostly depend on how foreingn girls act. I am never a playgirl type of person, and I treat this relationhship in a serious manner, my boyriend feels that and treats it in the same way. We are planning to get married after his becoming a usa medical doctor.  He is studying hard now for the usa exam. I am waiting.

One of my boyfriend's friend, a nice looking Italian guy, also in a relationship with a foreign girl who is studying in Italy.  The Italian guy has just been admitted to the Yale University with a scholarship for a PhD.  If he comes to the usa with his nice looking italian face plus his education, he can cheat hundreds of times without his girlfriend here, instead, he is trying to arrange his girlfriend to come to the usa with him.

I have never met that girl but only know that she studies hard in Italy and same as me, she is of chinese origin and said to be very traditional. It gives me an idea that women like us, traditional, conservative and never wear s**y clothes or heavy make up would never ever be the target of any playboys. We are not wild or hot enough for them. Whoever comes to us, mostly are guys looking for serious relationships. That is exactly what we hope for.

Therefore, I absolutely don't think it is true that Italian guys like to cheat, in fact, many of them are really honest and loyal if you act in the right way.

Cheating is not a "custom", it's considered a misbehaviour, to say the least; of course people who misbehave do exist.

But I think that stereotype came at least partially from a sort of misunderstanding: Italians and Europeans in general are more open toward relationships and/or s*x and even about what a "dating" is supposed to be; if at any time happens you meet somebody you want to start a sort of "serious" relationship with, just be sure to clearly state what *you* expect from that. Of course you should also be aware the fact you're anyway going to leave after few months will not help a long term love affair. I think it's important you're just ready to say "no" if the case.

As for you being American... the only real difference is young males (well, even not-so-young ones :-) seems to be even more inclined to flirt with foreign girls just because they're foreign; usually that result in an Italian guy try to talk to the girl in a sort of ungrammatical, enemy of syntax English mixed with Italian words. I suppose you may think "It's just the same as American boys, plus the Italian words" :)

But as for young males used to whistle to good looking girls, just remember "they bark but they don't bite".

Italians teens are anyway well aware movies do not represent the real word. Italian movies and TV shows are full of beauties the same way, after all (with lot less silicone :-).

The most important thing is just use your common sense (like, don't get drunk, even if in Italy you can legally drink alcoholics)

And absolutely don't be ashamed to ask for advice to female members of your host family even about dating Italian boys. (of course your own family should agree with your behaviour is understood)

Hi, I live in Italy.  This is really difficult to say.  Some will think you are an easy lay...sorry, but a lot of us Americans have that reputation.  Blame it on Hollywood, and blame it on the air-head Americans that have s*x with every guy when they are abroad.  The guys will be 15-16-17 and I doubt they will be thinking about settling down. On the other hand, don't assume all Italian guys are cheaters. I've been living here almost 9 years and I've met a lot of faithful Italian guys.  The thing is that if they think you are only a "lay" they'll most likely cheat but if they fall in love with you and have a serious relaitonship they most likely won't. Plus, be honest...are all American guys faithful??  Hugs and enjoy Italy.

They are going to be disappointed...after look the crappy Usa movies they all think you are all like Pamela Anderson..so when they will see you they could be bother less..believe me you can't compete with the local girls except the fact that some italians assume that as an american you will be an easy shag
