Question:

Italy Fashion!?

I'm going to Italy in March and I was wondering what styles are in, what styles are out, what I should wear and what I should most definitely NOT wear. How do the Italians dress? What would be impressive? What shoes since I will be walking...etc. Thanks very much.

  1. Italian style is mostly classic with prevailing trends mixed in.  Their clothing is well fitted and body conscious almost to the point of being tight. Neutral clothing in dark colors is easiest to mix and match and layer, most Europeans wear dark colors.  Accessories can punch up outfits with added color or pattern.  Italians/Europeans wear scarves, much more so than Americans so definitely pack one or plan to buy one once you arrive in Italy.

A good piece of outerwear is a must for March.  Your most visible piece of clothing will be your coat, so choose one that is well fitted and flattering.  Leather/Motorcycle jackets are a big trend right now so if weather permits you might want to opt for that instead.

Jeans are also alright to pack, everyone in Italy wears them,  the prevailing style is the skinny, but boot-cut is also OK.  As far as footwear goes, boots are big in Europe right now.  Boots worn with tucked in skinny jeans/pants is a big look right now but they are also worn with skirts and dresses.

If you choose a boot make sure it is comfortable to walk in, a small stacked heel gives you stability and a bit of height.  Clarks (known for their line of walking shoes)  has a more fashion forward line of shoes that include some cute boots.  You will be doing a lot of walking so footwear is very important.  Other footwear options are a sleek trainer, ballet flats, or converse tennis shoes -all of which are also trendy in Europe at the moment.

As long as whatever clothing you take is well fitted, flattering, and comfortable you will look and feel fine.  Small details such as a colored/metallic leather handbag or dramatic scarf will make a stylish impression.

Do NOT wear regular gym/running shoes, overly baggy clothing, crocs, uggs, gym clothes, or hiking boots.

    Enjoy your trip!

  2. The only thing I would say is not to wear shorts or tank tops.  You don't see many Italians in these and the churches will not let you enter if you are in them.  But it will still be a little chilly there in March so that probably will not be an issue.

  3. Hmm...I would say, bring your own clothes that suit your tastes and that look cute on you!  Use colors that accent your skin tone and that suit your shape/figure; you know, things that complement who you are.  You never know, the Italians may like it because its something different that they've never seen and because it looks good on you!  I'm sure that while you are in Italy, you will pick up on some of the fashion there and incorporate it in with your own style!

Have fun!  I'm going to Italy also in July for the 1st time on a study abroad trip!  :-)
