I'm going to Italy for the first time with my family this summer. We're staying in Rome, but we're going to try and see as much of Italy as possible. We're going to stay for a little more than a week, 9 days i think. I was wondering if you had any significant places we could visit? And I also read about Eurail traveling....I was wondering if anyone had any information about it. From what I've read it's comfortable and fast. Anyways, if you can contribute any suggestions for our stay, we'd appreciate it.

  1. i suggest going to florence for a little time, maybe to a beach, because it's a lot different than the US beaches. If I had nine days, 6-7 of them I would spend in Rome.

  2. My favorite place in Italy is Cinque Terre (you can find it on google, it's 5 towns on the Med. coast, you can hike from town to town, breathtaking).  Also, Bologna is a gorgeous city for a day trip.  While Venice is iconic, it's overpriced and, in my opinion, a waste of time.

  3. Hello:

If you plan on traveling within Italy and Europe in general, you will want to purchase Eurorail passes from the US. You can find their website quite easily.

I would guess you are planning to see other places than Rome. If so, I suggest Tuscany (Florence/Siena) which are within a few hours of Rome and could be a great excursion outside Rome for a few days.  check out www.tuscany.net for further information.  Also www.rome.net is a good site for Rome. The Worldby.com group, which the two sites I just made reference to are part  of WorldBy.com and they are a great source for accommodations, sightseeing, museums etc.

    Happy Travels!

  4. I went to Italy 2 summers ago and had a great time. Try to get in on as many tours as possible, they are not that expensive and are fun and informative.

We stayed in Rome for 4 days and then took a 2 hours tourist bus ride to Naples (drive was very scenic), and spent the afternoon looking around in Naples, then took a short boat ride from Naples to Capri and it was beautiful! Did some sight seeing there, and great shopping. Had dinner and then took another boat ride to Sorrento. Great town.

All this can be booked while you are there via phone (most hotels are great help) or you or any of your family members can set it up ahead with a travel agent.

    Have a wonderful trip!!

  5. I would not bother getting a euorail pass for one country.... just use the systems there, there are the trains available and I accidently found myslef on one (I had to pay the difference in price from my ticket, which was about double the price but it was very nice indeed).

I know that the main trains (Trentitalia..you can look up their website) pay per kilometer, so short trips are often a bit cheaper than longer trips.

I would definately suggest Florence as a place to visit...Pisa is about an hour train ride and worth a quick visit to the leaning tower (there is little else there), I loved Lucca a little town again about an hour from Florence and Siena is lovely too (agian easy access from Florence)....Even tho Florence is busy it is a beautiful city with lots to see.

Pompeii is definately worth a look too....I did a day trip from Rome and I really enjoyed it....you can get tickets from around Rome at tourist places scattered around.

I heard that Capri and Sorrento are definate must sees (which I missed out on grrrrr) and again you can get day trips from Rome if you want to see them (and save the hassle of getting there etc).

If you could get to Venice it would be good too, but its a long train ride and out of the way really for you and you should concentrate on fewer places more in depth perhaps as it can get stressful travelling (with everyone wanting different things, so maybe nice to have a day or 2 set aside for times where people can split up or chill out for a while.)

Have fun, its a great place
