I am travelling to Rome for 5 days. I am hoping in that 5 days to go down to Venice maybe. What are the things I have to do in those 5 days to maximize my time in those five days?

have fun. italy is fabulous. :)

  2. I've been to Italy a lot and I wouldn't recommend the summer there unless you're going to the coast.

Venice - Saint Mark's Square, The Doge's Palace, Rialto bridge, Bridge of Sighs, Arsenal, The Accademia, Giacomo Cassanova's house, The Grand Canal and Murano.

Rome - Vatican Museums which include the Sistine Chapel, St Peter's Basillica, Castel Saint Angelo, Forum, Colosseum, Palatine, Circus Maximus, Via Appia, Gallery Borghese, Capitoline Museums, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon and many many churches.

Padua, Verona, the lakes, the Dolomites etc etc.

I can only list a few things here or I'd be going on for days

If you're pushed for time then train travel in Italy is very cheep and efficient.

Great guide books are the Eyewitness Travel Guides. They have photos, every attraction you can think of, opening times and great maps.

Take a look at these web sites and enjoy your trip.

  3. depends where you are staying.

You might as well get the urge to go to venice out of your system early because you want to have more time in Rome. I went for under 2 hours and it was worth the train ride.

Take the train early to Venice from Rome just buy your tickets at the train station it's kind of confusing at first if you do not speak italian Just go straight to the machines & buy your tickets. It stops 3 times take something to do and enjoy the scenery. You will end up in Venice and you can take a water taxi or the big ferry to take a quick tour and stop at random bridges to look around. Dont waste too much time walking around Venice the view is better from the water. You can also take a gondola ride IF YOU MUST. Send yourself a postcard from the post office they have some cool glittery postcards & take lots of photos there! Pack a lunch or eat something light before you leave to Venice.  Anyhow when  you've gotten the Venice urge out of your system buy a train ticket to florence from the station in Venice. When you arrive in florence there is a tourist stop near the exit on your left going to the city they usually have people that will take you to a hotel thats pretty cheap. We stayed at the Balcony hotel it was fine for one night. Then just hang out walking the streets in Florence and find a nice quiet restaurant to have dinner away from the center square. Stop at Ponte Vejio (not sure of the spelling). And try not to get lost when walking aroudn the city.  Next day if you have time go hang out in florence or go for a bike tour in tuscany. Don't waste too much time on those big buses that take you around everywhere  - you can take the regular bus or walk everywhere.  Florence is on your way back from Venice so stop there it's one of the best places to see and it's not a big city. Take the train back to Rome early and I think it stops 1 time but I am not certain. Take something to do and a have something to eat before you leave florence. Once you are in Rome don't take a break start at the spanish steps or Trastever and follow the maps.  Places that I think are a must:

    Piaza Novona

Spanish Steps (the view from the church above) You can also stop and see Cafe Greco and have a quick shot of espresso, ask them if you can look around inside. If you eat inside (sit down) it's a bit more $ this applies to many eating spots.or you can skip the stairs that lead you to the church and make a left if you are facing the steps. Take that street all the way to where it leads you and visit the Piazza de popolo ( i think that was the name) climb those steps and you will have a better view. There is a big park behind the view and you can relax for a while on the benches. Check out the statue the medici statue that has a red face somebody graffitied on it.

Trevi Fountain in the day & at night

The pantheon when the sun is almost done setting. The sky looks amazing. The best part was all the pillars and the walls outside the pantheon.

Vatican City if you want to see the sistine chapel. Make sure to check the time they are open. We didn't get to see it because of the time crunch as well. But you haveto weigh your options.

Don't stay long in trastevere if you go when you get off the bus just walk forward and make a right on the entrance street that street will lead you to the center square I recomend having something to eat there. It's such a peaceful town. We fell asleep at the park on the benches just relaxing. Not homeless style!!! Don't pack too much clothse just wash them if you get a chance and when you go to venice take a small back pack or use the same clothse there is a laundry mat close to the post office.

Rome is fun just walk everywhere everything is so close by.

You will have enough time to see everything that is important. Drink some wine eat when you get hungry and have fun. Don't get overwhelmed trying to pick the best place to eat everywhere taste good and the view in the alleyways of piazza novona is just as good as the views in the center square. it's mainly just being in italy and enjoying the scenery that makes it so special. Talk to as many people as you can and you will find more stuff to do.

Excuse my spelling i tried to type as much as i could in short time.

oh yeah, don't forget the gelatto and lemonchello, and if you ask for melonchelo there is one bar that has it taste better than the lemonchello. Just enjoy the time you are there.

  4. my suggestion is this: take the most from your 5 days. Think about taking the train at night from Rome, sleep in the train and awake the day after in Venice.

PS: these are the tours you can book in Rome: http://www.siteseeings.com/city_1-0.html

  5. In Venice-

Gondolo ride, The Bridge of Sighs, St Marks Square, The Rialto Bridge and Doges Palace.

    In Rome-

Circus Maximus, The Colliseum, St Peters Basillica, Trevi Fountain and Vatican City.

    Have a great trip.

  6. Venice is somewhat isolated, taking a train is probably a good idea. You want to go north-east from Rome.

  7. Five days are not so many, and Venice is rather far from Rome (5 hours by train, 7 hours by car). Both towns are wonderful and full of things to see, you risk to waste a lot of time just for the travel. I think you'd better spend your time to visit Rome and go to Venice another time.

  8. Spend at least two days in Rome, so that you will have time to tour the Vatican, visit the ruins and see the architecture in the city.  You will also like the piazzas or squares and the fountains.  Be sure to see the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain.  If you want to see museums, avoid Mondays, because they are closed on Mondays to the best of my knowledge.  If you want to get into a lot of public buildings in Italy, you should be dressed in attire that is considered to be culturally acceptable in Italy.  Be careful about wearing shorts or skimpy clothing.

You should make a point of stopping in Florence and Pisa on the way to Venice, so at least allow a few fours to see each place.  The trains are not particularly fast.

You do not mention how you will be travelling.  You should be able to see a lot of Venice in one day.  You probably will want to see it by night as well as by day.

You can find a lot of good advice in a guide book such as 'Let's Go to Europe'.  It will tell you where to find affordable restaurants and accommodation.  It could potentially save you some time and stress.

  9. You can easily spend 5 days just in Rome. Adding Venice to the trip will mean not seeing either properly.

If you're planning on going to Venice by road (car or bus), it takes a whole day to get there from Rome, and then a whole day to get back. So 2 days out of 5 wasted just in travel time. That's crazy, I think.

Borrow the DK guidebook to Rome from your library and have a look through it. Everything in that book is worth seeing - I've been to Rome five times, I'm going back later this month for 10 days, and I've still only seen about less than half of it.

Its incredible what's packed into that city - after 5 days you would have just scratched the surface.

    A few suggestions -

Day 1 - Ancient city. Roman Forum, Coliseum, Palatine Hill, Imperial Fora, Trajan's Markets.

Day 2 - Centro Storico (Historic Centre). Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Ara Pacis, wandering around the small streets and shops of the Historic Centre.

Day 3 - Castel San Angelo, Vatican and St Peter's. Allow an entire day for the Vatican. You don't want to rush through the Vatican Museums to get to the Sistine Chapel - take it all in!

Day 4 - Museo Nazionale Romano. Late afternoon relaxing.

Day 5 - Revisiting anything you loved and wandering around the shops before leaving.

    Or .........

Day 5 - If you have all of the last day, go out to either Tivoli to see the Villa d'este and Hadrian's Villa, or Ostia Antica, a city similar to Pompeii but not as far to go as Pompeii is from Rome.

And no matter where you are in Rome, if you walk past a church and its open, go inside. EVERY church in Rome is amazing - so filled with art that they look like an art museum.

Leave Venice for another time - that's another 5 days in itself.
