Question:

Italy Vacation - Capri?

I am going on vacation at the end of this month. Rome, Naples then Capri. I've been to Rome before, and so we'll only be staying there a few nights. From there, we're taking the train to Naples, and are contemplating whether to stay overnight in Naples, or head straight to Capri, our main destination. People have told me that Naples is a bit of a waste of time, and so a few hours will suffice. So essentially, my question is, should we spend more then a few hours in Naples? Also, any tips for when we're in Capri?

  1. Naples is scary.  But, it's worth one night if you can stay in one of the waterfront hotels with a view room. It will make it fairly easy to get to Pompeii, the Pompeii Museum (in Naples), and several of the famous churches.

In Capri, relax.  You can go to the shops in Capri Town, take the chair lift, view the famous rocks, visit the blue grotto, or just hang out by the pool.

It's also alot of fun to find hole in the wall eateries for the locals.  They have the best food.  We also bought some food items from the local stores (cheese, bread, olives, tomatoes, etc), a bottle of wine, some limoncello, and sat on our balcony and did a 'picnic'.  It was fantastic.

If you get the chance, visit the Sappori di Capri shop in anacapri - it's just below the Axel Munthe house.  They hand make the best limoncello, have gorgeous perfumes, and you could even get a pair of custom sandals.  I wish we would have bought more limoncello - it's the best I've had!!!

  2. Spend at least a full day and night in Naples if you want to see a true Italian city and not some tourist trap for suburbanites.  Longer if you want a real experience and a chance to meet people.

  3. naples is a real italian city it is worth a day at least on the way to sorrento is pompai(spelt incorrectly) its also well worth a look. to get to capri you need to go from sorrento which is were i stayed.i caught the ferry out to capri it is soooo nice but very expensive to stay.you have to go to the blue grotto it will blow your mind.
