Italy beats U.S. by 3-1 in Pool E: FIVB Volleyball Women´s Junior World Championship
The second day of the second round of the FIVB Volleyball Women´s Junior World Championship took place in Peru on Wednesday, July 27th. A Pool E match took place between Italy and U.S. in Lima at the Eduardo Dibos Gymnasium. Four thrilling sets
concluded with Italy acheiving a win by 3-1.
The first set of the match was tough, with Italy bagging it in the very end. However, the U.S. squad lost some of its momentum in the second set but came back with an energised performance in the third set of the game. Unfortunately for the U.S. squad, the
third set was the only one that they could manage to grab as Italy clinched the match by winning it at the following final set scores: 25-23, 25-18, 21-25 and 25-20.
The U.S. coach, Robert Browning, made the following comments at the press conference that was held after the fixture: “Congratulations to Italy. We have to play better to get the victory. Today we had mistakes on serve and the Italian players are really
good.”
On the other hand, the Italian coach, Marco Mencarelli, expressed himself in the following words: “Surely it was not a beautiful match in the technical aspect because both teams had mistakes. Fortunately, Italy could win.”
The opening set of the match saw the U.S. side in a leading position at 4-0 but the Italians closed in the gap at 6-4. The U.S. was still at an advantage at the first technical time out with 8-4 but the Italians equalised the score at 13-13 soon after the
two teams came back on to the courts. The Italians were leading the set at 16-13 as the second technical time out was called. The U.S squad was able to reach a tie later in the game at 23-23 but it was the Italian side that capped off a win at 25-23.
The U.S team battled hard in the start of the second set of the game and was close by the Italians when the match reached the first technical timeout at 8-7. However, as the game drew on, Italy was able to extend its advantage to 16-12 and the U.S. team
found itself still trailing at 21-15. Therefore, it was only matter of time that the Italians bagged the second set of the game at 25-18.
The Americans were determined to earn a win in the third set but the Italians did not make it easy for them to secure the set at 25-21. Despite the fact the U.S. side tried to stop the Italians from scoring another win, Italy went all the way to seal the
deal at 25-20 in 26 minutes.
The Pool E statistics of the Italian team show a total of two wins accomplished against no loss at all whereas the U.S. team has registered one win and one defeat. If the U.S team fails to win its match against Peru, its progress in the tournament will come
to a halt.
