Coming in from the NW from Amsterdam through Paris and Geneva. How are the road signs? Easy to follow? Any ideas about car rentals from Amsterdam to maybe ending in Rome?

Have until September to figure it all out. Have plane tickets already.

  1. Everything is relatively easy to follow. the only thing is you will have to look at the maps because some of the autobahns change numbers when you cross over from one country to another. as far as the other roads, you will have to pay close attention to the road signs so that you do not miss your turn. mapquest.com is a great place to get directions. it is what I used when i drove from germany to Paris and the directions were right on point. same thing from Germany to Jeselo Italy.

  2. I have done the same trip several times.  My best advice is to rent a car with a GPS navigation system in it.  They are really easy to figure out and without the one we had, we would probably still be lost in Europe somewhere.  The road signs are easy to figure out but trust me, they are worth any extra money.

  3. You can't use your car on Sundays.

  4. one of the best road in italy is the COSTIERA to Trieste.

if you have time you can drive on it

    ciao

  5. Sure it is easyest to drive through italian highways then the french ones. More to say is that the autogrills in Italy and fuel distribution is of high level.

May be you can find some difficulties on local ways, but you'll find a lot of people helping you... just not like in many other european countries.... sorry.

  6. Car travel in Italy is for the experienced driver. If you are familiar with driving within Europe you should be fine. The road signs are fairly good, especially on the Autostrada and other major highways.  The state routes are marked pretty well, but I would definitely have a good driving map with me.

    Happy Travels.

  7. It is very easy, maybe a bit long but overall easy to do you can also check on google earth for map.

As for renting all major company shoudl allow you to rent a car in  Holand and returning it in Roma, although I am not sure if it is convenient in terms of cost, unless you are not planning to do it in one go.

Driving in Italy will require a bit more of "ability" but nothing you cannot master. Road signs are good and clear

  8. My husband and I have made the exact same trip twice- except for the swiss part (isn't that a bit out of the way?)

The best advice I can give- get a GPS/navigation system.  It is a priceless tool.  Mine is a handheld that can be used in any car.  The program we use is from TomTom.  They have maps of every city in the world!  I can't say enough good things about it.

We were staying in a farmhouse in the most remote little village in Tuscany and the dang thing took us right to the front door.  "in 200 meters you will reach your destination"

Have fun- september is a great time to go- it won't be so hot and the touristy spots won't be as crowded.

If you want to know some cool places to go in Amsterdam just ask me.
