Italy clinches Women’s water polo gold by beating Greece: Day 13 – European Water Polo Championships
Italian national team has clinched Women’s water polo gold by overwhelming Greece on thirteenth day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Saturday, January 28 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Italian squad remained in a strong position throughout the final match and prevailed over Greece by a margin of three goals. With their exceptional efforts in the 32-minute game, Italy ensured their win by a 13-10 effort in the Women’s playoff.
The championship was conducted by European aquatic sports organising body, Ligue Europeenne de Natation (LEN).
The Italian team demonstrated their breath-taking efforts in the first quarter, where they outsmarted Greece by claiming four goals in the first quarter. On the contrary, Greek players were able to score just one goal and the score remained 4-1 after the first round.
With their continued efforts, Italian athletes served notice of their talent in the second quarter and notched up two goals. Once again, no substantial improvement was witnessed at the end of Greek squad, which yet again scored a lone goal and the score went up to 6-2 after the first half.
The arena saw elevated efforts of Greek team in the third quarter, which accomplished three goals, but their effort failed to bring any harm to their challenging team, that achieved four goals. With their persistent efforts, Italy managed to extend their lead to five goals as the round expired with an effort of 10-5 from both sides.
The fourth quarter was dominated by Greek squad, which took control over the ball and stroke five goals. In contrast, the Italian team stroke three goals and secured victory in the final round by a lead of three points.
Roberta Bianconi of Italy became the centre of attention for media, as she achieved four goals and was declared player of the match for playing a crucial role in her team’s victory.
In addition, the session came to an end after the mind blowing performances of all teams in their respective matches whereas the winning teams were awarded medals and accolades after the completion of session.
