Italy conquer Chile to remain in World Group – Davis Cup 2012
Italy’s Andreas Seppi dismissed the Chilean number one, Paul Capdeville, with a breadstick at the Davis Cup World Group Pay-off 2012 on Sunday. He nudged up a 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 success against the world number 159 to give his side unassailable 3-1 lead against
Chile.
The Italian number one, Seppi showed flawless performance to outrun Capdeville for the third straight time. As a result, Italy retained their World Group status for second straight year after an 11-year absence.
Seppi reflected in a post match press conference:
“I think the best match I played for sure today. It was a very solid match. I think it was good for me to not think too much about the doubles yesterday, where we didn’t play so well. I am very happy I could play at this level today in the singles.”
“The second set, he played unbelievable,” Capdeville commented. “The third set, I tried to get in, I tried to change a couple of things. But him, he’s so, so tough. He plays so fast. I feel really, really sad. I think this is the important point [that] I
lost. But I keep going.”
The Italian star made a powerful entry at the Tennis Club Napoli in Naples, Italy. He easily bagged his entire serves without facing much trouble. Seppi got the breakthrough in the eighth game and clinched the opener with a 6-3 score line.
Ranked 28th in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Seppi lifted his game in the proceeding set. He reeled off four games in a row through exceptional attacking skills. After Capdeville held
his serve in the fourth game, the Italian pocketed the last two games and clicked the set with a breadstick.
The 28-year-old kept momentum rolling in the third set and after breaking the Chilean’s opening serve, he leaped to a 2-0 lead. Despite losing his edge in the very next game, the Italian remained focused and held his remaining serves with poise. He capitalised
on another break chance in the eighth game and sealed the set by winning six games to three.
