Italy crushes Greece in preliminary round, Group A: Day eight – European Water Polo Championships
Italian squad has crushed Greece in their fifth Men’s water polo qualifying match of Group ‘A’ on eighth day of the ongoing 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Monday, January 23 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Greek squad demonstrated their breath-taking efforts in the four-quarter game, but the Italian team showed no mercy and grabbed the victory by a margin of three goals. The Italian team crushed all struggles of their opposing team with a 10-7 defeat.
With the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic Games, these European Championships are of substantial importance as they provide a chance to all international teams to play against each other and improve their strategy before the mega stage of sports.
The Greek squad overwhelmed Italian team in the first quarter of the tournament. They scored three goals in the first round while Italian players managed to respond by accomplishing just two goals and the score remained 2-3, with Greece on the lead.
The arena witnessed a laudable effort of Italian players in the second quarter as they notched up five goals to take lead over their challenging team. In contrast, Greek players were able to improve their score by just one fraction and the score went up to 7-4 after the halftime.
The third quarter was relatively competitive than the previous ones, as Greek squad dictated terms to Italy by clinching two goals. On the other hand, Italy scored just one goal but managed to sustain their lead over Greece, as the score remained 8-6 after the third round.
Nevertheless, the Italian players improved their strategy in the final round and outperformed their rival team by accomplishing two goals. On the contrary, Greece marked just one goal in the fourth quarter and experienced defeat at the hands of Italian team.
Alex Giorgetti and Pietro Figlioli of Italy scored two goals each and made a vital contribution in their team’s victory. Furthermore, the Italian team will now contest with Germany in the quarterfinal of the tournament on Wednesday, January 25.
In addition, the championship will complete on January 29, after the conclusion of all scheduled events.
