Italy defeats Argentina by 3-1 in a 2011 FIVB World Cup match - Volleyball
The third day of the third round of the 2011 FIVB Men’s World Cup saw the Italians take on Argentineans in Hamamatsu, Japan, on November 29th. The Italians overpowered the South Americans by 3-1.
Four thrilling sets were required for the Italian win. The first set of the match was the most competitive as both sides were trying to assert themselves in the game and take the upper hand. All through the frame, the Italians as well as the Argentineans
were able to stay neck to neck with each other with no one sure where the tables would turn until the very end. Finally, it was the Argentinean squad that earned itself a well deserved win.
The loss of the opening set increased the pace of the Italians a bit. In contrast to this, the Argentineans were playing with less energy and they let the lead slip out of their hands during the middle of the set. Once the Italians had the lead, they did
not let go of the advantage till they had bagged the second set. The momentum generated on winning the second set of the game got the Italians coming out strong in the third set. As a result, it was a relatively easy job for the Italians to earn themselves
another comfortable win. The Argentineans were seen to step up a notch but the effort was not enough to take the match to a fifth set as the Italians sealed the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 34-36, 25-20, 25-19 and 25-20.
The coach of the Italian side, Mauro Berruto, shared his views in the following way: “I’m happy about today. I expected much from Argentina today, as they play wonderful volleyball. The first set was a fight, one which we lost as a result of some mistakes.
But I’m proud that we controlled the game, with three very good sets against Argentina, which is not easy.”
