Italy defeats Poland 3-2 in a World Grand Prix match – Volleyball news
A Pool L match of the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix saw a contest between Italy and Poland on Sunday, June 24, 2012. The match between the two sides took place in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei. Both the teams fought hard for the win and took the contest to
five thrilling sets at the end of which Italy was able to celebrate a well deserved win.
The score board showed the following final set scores: 23-25, 20-25, 26-24, 25-23 and 15-13.
Despite the fact that they lost the match, the Polish team has still been able to earn a place in the final round of the championship.
The coach of the Italian squad, Marco Bacci, shared his views on the outcome of the match in the following manner, “Congratulations to Poland because they are going to the WGP finals. It was very difficult to play against Poland in this match today, but
my girls became more determined to win after losing the first two sets, so finally we won the match.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Polish team, Alojzy Swiderek, expressed himself by giving the following comments, “Congratulations to Italy on their Olympics qualification. We lost this match because my team underestimated Italy after winning the first
two sets, and also because our receiving became worse in the last three sets.”
The player who was able to score the most points in the match was the Italian captain Serena Ortolani who kept the pressure on her opponents by tallying 29 points for her team. On the other hand, the most points scored on the Polish side were 26 by Agnieszka
Bednarek-Kasza.
The Polish squad took the lead early on in the first set and managed to hold it for a long time. It was not until 22-24 that the Italians closed in the gap but the Polish squad did not relinquish their hold and went on to bag the opening frame at 25-23.
The second set started off with both the teams playing well and the score tied at 6-6. However, it was the Polish side that got the upper hand at 16-14 when the second technical time out came. Poland did not let go of the advantage and steadily moved on
to another set win at 25-20.
Poland did not perform as well in the third set as in the previous two that cost them a lead which Italy was able to take at 18-13. However, Poland tied the frame at 18-18 but it was the Italians who were able to avoid a clean sweep by securing the set at
26-24.
The Italians were able to get the lead at 14-11 in the fourth set and they stuck with the advantage until the end with Poland trailing behind. Italy won the fourth set at 25-23 and took the match to a fifth set.
The final set of the game was competitive with the frame tied at 5-5 but it was Italy who landed the final point and secured the frame at 15-13.
