Italy defeats Serbia by 3-1 in Volleyball World Cup fixture
The Italian national men’s volleyball team took on the Serbian squad on November 28th on the second day of the third round of the 2011 FIVB Men’s World Cup. The Italians walked away with a 3-1 win in front of the crows gathered at Hamamatsu, Japan.
It took a total of four long and thrilling sets for the competition between the two sides to reach its close. By the time that the day was done, the Italians were celebrating their hard earned win over the Serbians. The first set of the match saw both the
teams head off into the match staying neck to neck. No team was letting the other take dominance for a long time. It was only in the final stages of the frame that the Italians were able to push themselves forwards and grab the opening set win.
The momentum generated by winning the first set enabled the Italians to start off the second set by in a strong fashion, the Serbians tried to give some challenge to the Italians in the initial stages but they fell behind later on and made it easy for the
Italians to earn themselves another win. The loss of the first two sets of the game triggered the Serbians to step up their game and they provided quite a challenge to their Italians counterparts and finally secured themselves a win to save being swept in
the match.
However, the third set was the only one that the Serbians could get their hands on as the Italians did not relent in the fourth set and bagged a victory which also gave them the match at the following final set scores: 25-20, 25-18, 22-25 and 25-20.
The coach of the Italian team, Mauro Berruto, shared his views by making the following statements at the press conference after the match had come to its close: “I’m happy for these three points moving on from yesterday’s loss. We have a clear target from
now on — we play our last four games, and we hope to win all matches and play all our cards for our ultimate goal.”
On the other hand, the Serbian coach, Igor Kolakovic, expressed himself by giving the following statements: “First I would like to congratulate the Italian team. I hope they can go to the Olympic Games. It was a great game for our younger players to experience.
I don’t like how we played the first two sets, but after that we started to think about how we scored each point, not about the victory. We deserved one set, and I’m very satisfied with that.”
