Italy demolishes Serbia by 3-0 in FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship match
The Eduardo Dibos Coliseum in Lima, Peru saw a pool fixture between Italy and Serbia on the closing day of Pool D matches of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship. The Italian squad nailed a straight set win by beating the Serbians 3-0 to
place in the top eight of the tournament and move onto the next round.
The Italians came out strong in the opening set of the game while the Serbians seemed to struggle on the court. This led to an easy first set win for the Italians as the Serbians could not pick up speed in the second set either and lost by quite a margin
to the Italians. It was only in the third set that the Serbians came to life but their new found energies were not enough to divert the Italians from winning the match at 25-14, 25-15 and 25-20.
The Italian captain, Chiara Scarabelli, had the following words to say at the press conference after the match: “It was a very important match and we played very focused. If we keep playing this way, we have a lot of expectations about this tournament.”
On the other hand, the Serbian captain, Danica Radenkovic, shared the following sentiments: “It was a good match. We did not expect to play this way. Italy played great and we were not focused.”
Italy was able to take advantage at the start of the opening set of the game at 8-4 and still had the lead at the second technical time out at 16-9. Even though the Serbians were trying to close in the gap, the Italians kept on moving fast to take the score
to 19-10 and later on to 24-10. It was only a matter of time before the Italians were able to win the first set of the game at 25-14.
The second set of the match saw the Serbians provide some challenge to the Italians as they kept the score close. However, the Italians had the match turned in their favour at the second technical time out at 16-9 which they were able to improve to 19-12.
The Serbians could not rally together to upset the Italians from securing the second set at 25-15.
The third set showed an increased level of competitiveness from the Serbian side as they were able to tie the match at 3-3 and kept it close at 11-10. The score was still tied after Italy asked for the first technical time out. However, it was the Italians
that were able to take the third and final set of the game at 25-20.
The Italian player that game a game winning performance was Valentina Diouf, who was able to score 17 points for her team and propel them to victory.
