Italy outperform Macedonia in preliminary round, Group A: Day six – European Water Polo Championships
Italy outperformed Macedonia in their fourth Men’s water polo qualifying game of Group ‘A’ on sixth day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Saturday, January 21 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Italian squad has continued their dominance by claiming victory with a margin of ten goals in the four-quarter game. With their relentless efforts, the Italian team rejoiced an easy 15-5 win over Macedonia in their fourth match.
The first quarter of the match was comparatively tougher, where the Italian players managed to gain a slight lead over their competitors by scoring three goals. In contrast, Macedonia scored just two goals but remained in a strong position as the round expired
with a score of 3-2.
The same continued in second quarter, where the score remained on a tight leash. Italy scored two goals in the second round while Macedonian players responded by achieving one goal only. The Italian players extended their lead to two goals as the score went
up to 5-3 after the halftime.
The tables turned in third quarter, where the Italian squad geared up their efforts and cemented their place for victory by notching five goals. With their magnificent effort, they were successful in hindering all efforts of their challenging squad that
managed to score just one goal and the score remained 10-4 after the third round.
The fourth quarter witnessed gruelling efforts of Italian team, which showed no mercy to their rival squad and yet again achieved five goals to advance on the overall rankings table. On the other side, Macedonian team was able to pass the ball in Italian
goal just for once and lost the match by a margin of ten goals.
Pietro Figlioli of Italy made a crucial contribution in his team’s victory by scoring four goals in the 32-minute game. Furthermore, Italy has now jumped to second best spot on the overall points table and is scheduled to play against Greece in its fifth
water polo match on Monday, January 23. In addition, the session ended after the conclusion of all scheduled events.
