Italy outshine Germany in the Men’s Quarterfinal: Day ten – European Water Polo Championships
Italian team dictated terms to German squad in the Men’s Quarterfinal round for 1st-6th position on tenth day of the ongoing 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Wednesday, January 25 at the Pieter van
den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The scores remained on a tight leash in the first half, but Italy triumphed over Germany in the final half and grabbed victory with a lead of five goals. The Italian team made no mistake in the four-quarter game and enjoyed a 9-4 win in the match.
The European Championships are of utmost importance as these help world-class players to discover their shortcomings and improve them before the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The Italian team faced immense battle from Germany in the first quarter, but they managed a lead of one point by the end of first round. Italy scored two goals in the initial round while German squad was able to pass the ball in their opponent’s cage just
for once and the score remained 2-1 after the round.
Almost the same continued in second quarter, where both teams geared up their struggles but Italy once again outperformed Germany on the scorecard. German team augmented their score by achieving two goals but their effort was occupied after Italy accomplished
three goals and the score went up to 5-3 after the halftime.
The arena witnessed unrelenting efforts of Italian players in the third quarter, where they succeeded in blocking almost all goal attempts of their challenging squad and accomplished three goals. On the contrary, German players managed to mark just one goal
and the score escalated to 8-4 after the third round.
Predictably, Italy proved its mettle in the fourth quarter by adding another goal on the scorecard while Germany failed to show any advancement on the points table and lost the match by five goals.
Christian Presciutti of Italy clinched three goals for his squad and was announced man of the match for playing an essential role in his team’s success.
Furthermore, Italy has advanced to the semi-final round and will compete with Serbia on Friday, January 27 while Germany will contest against Greece for fifth position on Saturday, January 28.
