Italy overcomes Peru by 3-0 in Pool E: FIVB Volleyball Women´s Junior World Championship
The second match of Pool E of the FIVB Volleyball Women´s Junior World Championship was held in Lima, Peru on Tuesday, July 26, as Italy and the home team Peru met on centre court. The Eduaro Dibos Gymnasium was packed with a pro-Peru crowd which was disappointed
to see their home squad lose 0-3 to Italy.
The Italians started their clean sweep over the Peruvians in the first set of the match, which was the most competitive as Peru fought till the very end. However, the consecutive second and third sets saw Peru losing its steam and the Italians were successful
in bagging a match win at 25-23, 25-20 and 25-14.
The Italian coach, Marco Mencarelli, made the following comment at the press conference that was held after the match: “We studied the rival before, which resulted successfully and we gained confidence.”
On the other hand, the Peruvian coach, Natalia Malaga, gave the following statements: “It was obvious the difference between the level of Italy and the level of Peru. There was a problem with concentration. Not all the players were mentally in the court.
We made a plan for this game, but we never could use it.”
The first set of the match started off with an Italian lead at 8-5 and still had the advantage at the second technical time out. Peru kept up the chase all through but as the set reached its close, the Italians were able to nail a win at 25-23. It took a
total of 27 minutes for the Italians to end the opening set of the game.
The Peruvian team put up a tough performance in the start of the second set of the game but the Italians still managed to get the lead at 8-7. However, the Peruvian team was able to tie the match at 16-16 after the two sides came back from the first technical
time out. The Italians did not give up despite the loud chants and encouragement from the pro-Peruvian crowd and went on ahead to seal the deal on the second set of the game at 25-20.
Peru started the third set in strong fashion and kept the score close till the first technical time out. However, Peru could not hold itself together after the two sides came back as the Italians extended the gap by 11 points. After that, it was only a matter
of time before the Italians secured the third set of the game at 25-14.
The overall record of the Italian team shows three wins secured against one loss whereas the defeat comes as the first one for the Peruvian squad.
