Italy overpower Spain in preliminary round, Group B: Day five – European Water Polo Championships
Italy’s national team overpowered Spain in their second Women’s water polo qualifying match of Group ‘B’ on day five of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Friday, January 20 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Italian team, which lost its first match from Greece, elevated their efforts in their second bout and claimed victory over Spain by a margin of four goals. The Italian squad made no mistake throughout the 32-minute game and grabbed victory with a 15-11 lead.
The European Championships are of considerable value as they give an opportunity to all international teams to compete with each other and improve their strategy for the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
Both teams demonstrated their tremendous skills in the first quarter, but Italy managed to prove its supremacy over Spain by a margin of one goal only. The Spanish squad scored three goals in the initial round, but their struggle was trailed by Italian athletes, who notched up four goals and the round expired with a score of 4-3.
The Italian team geared up their efforts in round two and smothered all efforts of their challenging squad by achieving four goals in a row. On the other hand, the Spanish team managed to add just one goal to their points list and the score went up to 8-4 after the halftime.
The third quarter was pretty tough, where both teams scored three goals each and Italy succeeded in maintaining its lead of four goals. The same continued in fourth quarter, where both squads failed to prove their dominance over each other and accomplished four goals each.
The crowd was astonished with the exhausting efforts from both teams whereas the Italian team celebrated their victory after the conclusion of the game.
Giulia Enrica Emmolo of Italy notched up four goals in the game and played a crucial role in her team’s victory. After their commendable victory, Italy has now jumped to third spot on the overall rankings list.
Furthermore, the session ended after the conclusion of all scheduled matches while Italy will play against Germany in their third bout on Sunday, January 22.
