Italy overwhelm Germany in preliminary round, Group B: Day seven – European Water Polo Championships
Italian squad overwhelmed Germany in their third Women’s water polo preliminary match of Group ‘B’ on seventh day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Sunday, January 22 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The European championships are of considerable importance as they give an opportunity to all world-class teams to compete with each other and prepare for the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
The Italian team demonstrated their noteworthy efforts by beating Germany in the four-quarter game. They captured a remarkable 18-12 win over Germany and qualified for the quarterfinal of the tournament.
The Italian players faced severe competition from their opponents in the first quarter. The German players scored three goals in the first round, but their effort was outperformed by Italy’s four goals accomplishment and the score remained 4-3 after the
round.
In the second quarter, the Germans remained consistent on their part and yet again accomplished three goals. On the contrary, Italian players crushed all hopes of their opposing team and notched up seven goals in the second round, making the score 11-6 after
the initial half.
The same continued in third quarter, where the Germans struggled hard to dictate terms to their challenging team, but once again, they failed to show any substantial improvement in their game and advanced on the scorecard by three points. On the other hand,
the Italian team extended their lead to six goals by achieving four goals in the third round.
Italy’s victory in the game was inevitable, as the lead of six goals was hard to overcome. Nevertheless, Germany succeeded in blocking all efforts of Italian players to extend the lead and both teams scored three goals against each other.
The crowd appreciated notable efforts of the Italian team, which celebrated their second victory of the tournament by a margin of six goals.
Roberta Bianconi of Italy was declared player of the game as she contributed four goals to ensure her team’s victory.
Italy now ranks second at the overall points table and is scheduled to participate against Netherlands in the quarterfinal whereas Germany will contest with Great Britain on Tuesday, January 24.
