  1. Yes, then again to travel anywhere is expensive. I don't know what the prices are for boat/cruise touring would be, but I do know from experience that touring Italy will be fun regardless on what you choose. As a struggling college student I was able to stay afloat as I bought memorabilia for me and souveniors for my family, ate out everyday and sometimes @ expensive restaurants, went on museum and city tours, and experienced the night life on just $1,500 for 2 wks.

So there is a way. I really think for a person on a budget $1,000 is appropriate for a wk. Um...in Italy you have to pay for things there that you wouldn't here in the States, like for example:

*Water (I guess it's not filtered. Wine is cheaper than water!)

*The table cloth on your table at restaurants

    *Bread baskets at restaurants

*Shopping cart at the grocery stores

*To use the restrooms (In Germany)

*Tip is included in your tab

But perhaps if you stay near tourist locations it'll be affordable.

  2. Go to Naples and Rome! Spend half your holiday in Naples and the other half in Rome! They are both awesome places. Go onto expedia.com/.co.uk They have some travel deals and stuff. Its easier planning your holiday this way!

  3. well if you cant afford it, why dont you take a Mediterranean cruise across Spain, South France, Italy and Greece. That would be cool, and plus you get to have a taste of 4 different countries instead of one ;)

  4. Italy varies a lot by region.  Venice is very expensive, most of the North is fairly expensive, Rome is moderate, and everything south of Rome is cheap by Western European standards.

It is still possible to see Italy cheaply without a cruise (which would probably be more expensive than touring it cheaply by land).  Stay in youth hostels or cheap, basic hotels.  If you want to stay in hotels, it helps if you have a traveling partner, since double rooms are cheaper per person than single rooms.  For inexpensive, clean hotels in safe areas, look at guidebooks like Lonely Planet or Rough Guides, or go to the tourist office (which will find an available room for you that fits the specifications you want - for a small fee).  There is lots of good cheap food across Italy - trattorias, pizzerias, bakeries, and cafes - if you restrict yourself to one meal per day in a real restaurant, you will still experience Italian food and will save a lot of money.  Finally, the trains are cheap in Italy, and as long as you don't rent a car you can get around cheaply.  The historic parts of most Italian cities are walkable - Rome is the exception and you will need to take the subway.

  5. I always found Italy expensive, even when the dollar was strong.  If you use the Lonely Planet guide book, you could put together a tour cheaper than a cruise, but it you just want to take it easy and have the money, the cruise sounds all right.
