Italy sweeps Germany in preliminary round of FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix
One of the final matches on the last day of the preliminary round of the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix took place between Italy and Germany on the 21st of August. The two teams competed in Hong Kong and by the time the day was done, the Italians
were celebrating their clean sweep over the Germans.
The first set of the match saw the Germans take time to settle down but the Italians ploughed on forcefully towards a comfortable win. However, the Germans stepped up their game in the second set of the match and kept the score close all through. Despite
the German efforts, it was the Italians side that was successful in securing another win. The third set of the match was the most competitive as the Italians looked to end the match quickly while the Germans wanted to give themselves a winning chance. The
Italians did not let the German hopes materialise as they won the match at the following final set scores: 25-15, 25-22 and 25-23.
The Italian coach, Massimo Barbolini, had the following words to say at the press conference that was conducted after the match had reached its close: “Today we played a good match, a match that helps us to arrive to the finals in Macau. But it is going
to be hard, for the best eight teams in the world will be in the tournament. It is important to see our improvement in each match. Today’s match is the same.”
On the other hand, the German coach, Giovanni Guidetti, made the following statements: “Congratulations to Italy, they are clever enough to use our weaknesses. I think we had a decent match, we did well in serving, defence and blocking. However, we still
have too many problems and hence lost points to them.”
During the first set of the match, both teams battled hard for dominance but it was the Italian side that got ahead at the first technical time out. Germany could not prevent the Italians from widening the gap and let the opening set slip out of their hands
as Italy bagged a win at 25-15.
The second set saw the Italians come out strong and take the lead at 14-8. The Germans were successful in limiting the scoring of the Italians as they reduced the gap. However, the Italians put on a spurt of speed in the end that brought them the second
set at 25-22.
Germany was leading at 11-10 in the third set but Italy took the advantage at 19-18. No one was sure where the tables would turn until the end of the game when the Italians sealed the deal at 25-23.
The Italians have been able to earn themselves a ticket in the finals of the tournament that is going to take place next week while the progress of the Germans has come to a halt.
