Scavolini Pesaro sweeps Crvena Zvezda in CEV Volleyball Champions League fixture
The CEV Volleyball Champions League is underway with pool play matches taking places in Europe. A Pool E match of the tournament took place in the Serbian city of Beograd on the December 7th between Crvena Zvezda of Serbia and Scavolini Pesaro
of Italy.
The competition did not make the local fans wait for long as it ended in three sets. Unfortunately for the local crowd, the team that was celebrating its clean sweep over their opponents was not the home team. The three set experienced an interesting mix
of ups and downs as the first and the third set were completely dominated by the Pesaro whereas the second one remained tight all the way till the end. By the time that the match had ended, the score board showed the following final set scores in favour of
the Pesaros: 25-10, 25-23 and 25-13.
The start of the first set saw Pesaros take the lead early on at 8-1. The distance between the two teams caused the local coach to make some changes in the line up of the Beograd squad by bringing on Teodora Pusic in place of the team’s captain Ana Bjelica.
However, the change did not prove to be of any value to the local team as the Pesaros were immovable in their onward progress. It was only a matter of time before the Italians were able to put on a spurt of speed and extend their advantage to grab themselves
an opening set win at 25-10.
The momentum generated by winning the first set made the Italians come out strong in the second set too and got themselves the lead early on. Despite that fact, the Serbians did not let go of the chase and pushed themselves forward to remain close behind
the Italians. However, the Italians still had the lead at 16-13 and they did not let go of the advantage even later at 21-19. Despite the valiant efforts of the home team, the Italians bagged themselves another win at 25-23.
The loss of the first two sets got the morale of the home team down and the Italians were able to win the third set in a smothering fashion.
The coach of the Scavolini squad, Luciano Pedullà, expressed his sentiments in the following manner at the press conference that was conducted after his team had won the day: “We served extremely well tonight and it was easy to defend because our block was
always very well placed.”
On the other hand, the coach of the losing team, Ratko Pavlicevic, shared his views by making the following statements: “We did not have any chances tonight but maybe the match could have unfolded differently if we had claimed the second set.”
