Italy sweeps Serbia in a FIVB World Cup match - Volleyball news
The Serbian women’s national volleyball team, who happen to be the European champions, took on the leaders of the FIVB World Cup, Italy, on November 13. The tournament is currently taking place Japan, and the Sapporo served as the backdrop for the 3-0 Italian
win.
The match did not take long to reach its close as the Italians were able to assert themselves on the Serbians after making a clean sweep. The victory has enabled the Italians to show a total of seven wins with no loss in this tournament so far.
The first set of the match was the most competitive and very intense as no one was sure where the tables would turn until the very end of the frame. However, the Italians were able to better their opponents and bag themselves a difficult win in the opening
set of the game. The loss of the first set seemed to have taken most of the steam out of the Serbians as they put in a half hearted effort in the second set that made it a lot easier for the Italians to secure another set by a significant margin. The third
set too did not see enough fighting spirit in the Serbians and the Italians dominated the frame near the end which gave the match to Italy at the following final set scores: 29-27, 25-19 and 25-20.
The coach of the Italian team, Massimo Barbolini, expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference that was conducted after the match reached its close: “I think that we deserve to arrive in this situation. I think we played a difficult
match because the Serbian team — despite not having all their players — played very well. At the end here we won a very important match.”
The coach of the Serbian team, Zoran Terzic, shared his views by making the following statements: “I would like to congratulate the Italian team and my good friend Massimo [Barbolini]. They played well today and in whole tournament. In this kind of situation
it was almost impossible for us to win without key players. We tried hard and we had one good game here, and we will try to finish — as Jovana says — with a smile we.”
The player that was able to score the most points in the entire match was Italy’s Simona Gioli who put up a total of 21 points for her team. Gioli was helped by her team-mate Carolina del Pilar Costagrande, who made her presence felt by adding 19 points
of her own. On the other hand, the top scorer on the Serbian side was Stefana Veljkovic with 17 points in all.
