Italy thrashes Spain in Men’s Water Polo: Preliminary Round Group A – London Olympic Games
Italy thrashed Spain in the preliminary round of Group ‘A’ Men’s Water Polo match on tenth day of the water polo events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in Water Polo Arena on Monday, August 6.
The Italian team faced tough competition from Spain throughout the game but with their utter determination and unique strategy, they ensured their victory and qualified for the quarterfinal.
The first quarter saw dominating efforts of Italian team that gave no chance to their challengers to retaliate. Italy blocked all efforts of Spain to score a goal and passed the ball in Spanish cage twice, hence gaining a lead of two as the score remained
2-0 after the first quarter.
Valentino Gallo of Italy scored the first goal for his team while the second goal was achieved by Christian Presciutti.
The second quarter saw gruelling efforts of both teams as Spain notched up three goals. Unfortunately, their effort was overpowered by a four-goal accomplishment from the Italian squad and the score went up to 6-3 after the halftime.
The arena experienced quick response of Spain’s Albert Espanol Lifante just after the start of the third quarter. Lifante scored a goal for his team in the initial 30 seconds of the round while no further goals were scored from his team throughout the quarter.
On the other hand, Italy notched up two more goals and extended their lead to four goals, making the score 8-4 after the third round.
Afterwards, Spain accomplished three goals in the final quarter while Italy managed to move up on the scorecard by just two goals. Nevertheless, Italy’s two goals effort was sufficient to place them in the victory corner as the match ended with a score of
10-7, Italy in a lead of three.
The highest goal scorer of the match was Danijel Premus of Italy, who scored three goals and ensured the victory of his team in the match.
Furthermore, the spectators applauded for notable efforts of all players while Italy received huge round of applause after the audience. In addition, the Italian team will face Hungary in the quarterfinal.
