Hello, I am getting married in Passignano in Italy this August and will be travellling to the country next week to meet various suppliers. I am keen to source my own wine however am a complete novice with Italian reds (well all wines really) and so was thinking of visiting Montepulciano & Montalcino, is this advisable? Can anyone offer any advice?

We are not experts but my partner and I both enjoy smooth juicy reds such as Shiraz as well as Carmenere but obviously would like to use a local Italian wine for our wedding.

Any advice on Italian whites would be apprecaited too!

thanks x

  1. You can start to go to visit Florence and after you will go to Siena and finish in Montalcino .......Montepulciano is in Chianti .Chianti is  between Florence and Siena . Toscany is a wonderful place ......I come from Prato is a city near Florence !!! Good trip ..... bye bye !!! Sorry for my english !!!

    =)

  2. super tuscans are the way to go --- montepulciano has a large tasting room in town & tho they charge for tastes this is the way to experiment.  montalchino also has many wine shops...both are charming "tourist" towns.  you could also stop into a variety of local restaurants to taste local wines, find out what you like & order it from the winery.....

also, many local wines are very good & inexpensive so you can go by shops & just choose by how you like the label or price....italy does not produce a variety of white wines-- pinot grigio being the most popular white.

    have fun!!!

  3. There are lots of open wineries in Montalcino, Montepulciano and Chianti where you can go visit and taste their wines. If you are planning to go to Italy next week, I suggest you ask people there and go to a "enoteca" (wine shop) in Passignano to taste some wines and get an idea of what you want and the prices.

  4. Montepulciano in not in Chianti but in Val di Chiana!!!! The nobile of montepulciano is very good!!

  5. Chianti red, Montepulciano red, Verduzzo white, Orvieto white, Brunello di Montalcino red, Etrusco red, and many other. But DON'T FORGET a very important thing. The wine is a food, if you are thirsty you have to drink water, so it would be better talk to the 'chef' of the restaurant to decide what your nuptial dinner will be. Only after, you could choose the wine, 'cause being food, not all wines are suitable with all foods. General (very general) rule: Red with meat, hunt, first dry courses (spaghetti, lasagne, tagliolini, etc:). White with fishes, some cheeses, first liquid courses (minestrone, acquacotta, etc.). Sweet white (better) or dry with the sweets (moscato or spumante). Wishes!
