Italy, on the fifth day of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers, defeated http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Uganda-c3031 by thirteen runs at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, on Sunday March 18, 2012.
After being asked to bat first, Uganda lost their way early on, losing three batters on the team score of 27. The innings was then rescued by the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Northcote-c44540 and Damian Crowley, who chipped in together for a 48-run 4th wicket stand.
The partnership was broken when the right-arm pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jonathan-Sebanja-c69190 picked the wicket of Northcote, who departed after scoring 23.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Carl-Stephen-Sandri-c49245 then came to bat alongside Crowley, as the two added 16 from 7 balls before the latter was sent packing by Brian Masaba, after a brisk 44-run knock which included five mammoth sixes.
While Italy was struggling at 91 for 5; Sandri managed to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adrian-Roger-Kirshaw-Pierson-c42135 it out with an unbeaten 26 off 13 balls, allowing his team to post a reasonable total of 131 on the board.
The Ugandan bowlers were successful in keeping their opponents at bay with Deusdedit Muhumza and Sebanja picking up two wickets from the bowling side.
However, their batters failed to compliment the good work of their bowlers and faltered badly in their pursuit of 132. After a decent opening partnership that yielded 22, Uganda lost both their openers in quick succession and slumped, losing three more before crossing the 50-run mark.
Despite late efforts from the lower-order, which included 20-odd run endeavours from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Charles-Waiswa-c50401, Uganda remained far from reaching the total and eventually faltered on 118 in 19.4 overs.
The Italian bowlers were excellent in coping with the threat of their opponents with the pick being front-line bowler, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gareth-Berg-c1457, who claimed an impressive 4-wicket haul. He was further aided by the likes of Sandri, Gayashan Munasinghe and Dilan Fernando, all of whom chipped in with a wicket a piece.
For his imperative bowling outing, Berg was awarded the Player of the Match award. The win puts Italy into third, while Uganda occupies the fifth spot in Group B.
