Italy wins title of 5km Open Water Team event: Day two – European Open Water Swimming Championships
The Open Water team of Italy claimed the gold medal of 5km Open Water swim on the second day of the 2011 European Open Water Swimming Championships, on September 8, in Eilat, Israel.
The Italian squad occupied the gold medal of the event by submitting a time 56 minutes and 12.4 seconds. The gold winning squad included Simone Ercoli, Luca Ferretti and Rachele Bruni, where Ercoli completed his swim in a time of 56 minutes and 10.4 seconds.
Ferretti, being the second leg of the team completed his swim in a time of 56 minutes and 10.5 seconds, while Bruni being the last member of the team, captured the gold medal of the event with a timing of 56 minutes and 12.4 seconds.
The second spot of the swim was obtained by Germany’s team, which remained 56.80 seconds slower than the gold winning squad and posted a time of 57 minutes and 15.2 seconds. The German squad comprised of Hendrik Rijkens, Rob Mufels and Svenja Zihsler, where
Zihsler being the third leg of German team was able to grab the silver medal of the team meet.
They were followed by the French Open Water squad, which remained nearly 26 seconds away from their former finishing squad and submitted a time of 57 minutes and 41.1 seconds for the bronze medal. The French team was able to win the bronze medal with the
participation of Sebastien Fraysse, Damien Cattin Vidal and Coralie Codevelle. Codevelle was the final swimmer of her team and she clinched the bronze medal of the discipline by finishing her swim in a time of 57:41.1 minutes.
The fourth spot of the event was secured by the Russian team, which remained 47.5 seconds behind the bronze medallists and posted a time of 58 minutes and 28.6 seconds. The Russian team were followed by Hungarian swimmers, who stayed nearly 19 seconds behind
them and concluded their swim with a timing of 58 minutes and 47.1 seconds.
The Spanish squad transpired as the sixth fastest team of the event, as they were 26.7 seconds slower than their former finishers and reported a time of 59 minutes and 23.8 seconds. Then, the Open Water team of Israel secured last spot of the team event,
as they were almost 41 seconds slower than the Spanish squad and produced a time of 1 hour, 04 minutes and 17.6 seconds.
In addition, the session concluded after the completion of 5km Open Water team event, while the podium finishers collected their awards and accolades after the event.
