Itchy black lab.......

We recently adopted a 4 yr old black lab (male). We knew the people we adopted him from, so we knew that he had a horrible diet during the time he lived with them. They only fed him human food which resulted in major weight gain. He's 125 pounds. Our vet told us to start giving him Iams weight control and to feed him only a certain amount a day. The vet didn't mention any other special diet needs for his skin though. Since he's been to the vet 2 months ago, he has developed HORRIBLE dry skin. The flakes on his back are so bad that he looks almost white. He scratches his back constantly on the floor and looks uncomfortable. I'm planning on taking him back to the vet within the next few weeks, but I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge on something we can do to help his dry skin in the meantime.

Normally I would say that it had something to do with a bad diet, but since you are starting a new feeding regimen already, just try an anti-itch, moisturizing shampoo like the one I found at Petsmart.
