In the last couple of says, my dog has been scratching more frequently. Wherever I scratch his belly, his legs start thumping. I have checked him all over for fleas or flea dirt, but have not found any.

I applied K9 Advantix to him on August 1.

Should I give him a flea bath? Or some other treatment?

  1. he may have dry skin, or may be dirty when was the last time you gave him a bath. If he continues then i would take him to the vet, or if you dotn want to do that i guess you could g to pet store and ask them.

  2. You should try using an oatmeal shampoo your dogs skin might be dry  my dog happens to have dry skin and i use an oatmeal shampoo from petsmart and it really helps her skin from being itchy plus she smells so yummy :)

  3. the leg thumping has nothing to do with it, all dogs do it and i'm puzzled of how he never did it before.

he could have allergies, an irritant, or some other thing causing this trouble.  has he itched with the advantix before?  if it's getting pretty bad, get him to a vet.

  4. it sounds like he has allergies..  this year has been bad for allergies.  especially flea allergies.  all it takes is 1 flea to jump on and take a bite and cause them to break out with the itchies.  try giving him a benadryl.  the dosage is 1mg per pound. so if he is a 40 pound dog he would get a 40 mg dose.  get the idea?  i hope this helps.  don't worry benadryl is very safe for dogs.

  5. Your doggie could have Mange, but you would see signs of it.  Or maybe eczema.  Maybe some sort of allergy, maybe to the grass outside, take him to the Vet, and he will probably give him some cortisone.  Try giving him a bath with Tea tree shampoo.

  6. Scratching his tummy will make his leg thump.  It's a reflex nerve thing.  Does he scratch anywhere else?  If he's not, then he's fine.

  7. The leg thumping thing is a nervous reflex, so it's normal. Your dog most likely has dry skin, but it may (though a lot less likely) have a skin condition.

  8. My dog gets an allergic reaction to different things at different time of year.  This results in initial scratching and then the skin goes red and hot.  If I don't treat it he will keep scratching until he starts to take off fur and bleed.  Some of the things that he is allergic to are grass seed, wandering dew, bindi spray, clover.  You can get allergy wash at pet shops.  Tea tree shampoo is good to if it isn't too serious.  If it continues though go to a vet because it might need a cortisone shot.

  9. My baby scratches all the time.Vet checked her. She's allergic to flea bites.I now bath her in "puppy"shampoo once a week and rinse her in cool water in between.I do give her benadryl 25mg every other day.Scratching goes away. She still gets Advantage every month. Also most doggies will thump one leg when you rub their bellies.I'd thump my leg if someone rubbed MY belly lol

Remember I had the Vet check her.She weighs 42lbs so 25 mg is safe for that weight.Hope this helps some.Lots of doggies do have some minor skin allergies,so its good to have him checked out.J

  10. You can try that, but it might also be dry skin. Ask your vet for recommendations on flea therapy, and if that doesn't work try a dry skin treatment!   :)

  11. dry skin,rash.

For dry skin:make sure you spray some sort of doggy leave-in conditioner before you brush him.Use a doggy conditioner after shampooing when it's bathtime.

For rashes:use some sort of doggy cream that you could find from Petco.

Take him to the vet for either reason as to why he scratches a lot.

  12. Your dog could have either a skin condition or dry skin.  If you bath your dog too much, that could cause the dry skin.  Also, if you're not - you must use appropriate shampoo formulated for dogs.  If it's not treated and your dog keeps scratching, it could scratch till it bleeds and things could get worse -- I've seen it happen. :-( You should take your family member to the vet for a routine examination (maybe $25 to $40) - the vet will probably give you something to bath your dog in which should help with the dry skin/skin condition if that's the problem.  If there are no flease present, that's probably the case.  Hope this is helpful. :-)

  13. Dogs can get skin allergies even if they've never had allergies their entire lives.

I recommend taking him to a vet to discuss allergy meds if that is indeed what he has.

If you notice hair loss patches, it could be possible that he has mites or even ringworm.

Either way, a visit to the vet is going to help him stop scratching as much.
