Itried to put a pair?

of sunglasses on my avatar,i got them on ok,then what?i go back to my profile and its the same as before,what do i do after i have chosen ?

You need to save your changes.

I tried this myself on my avatar and it worked a treat.

I can't understand why it didn't work for you!!!

Go to my profile,  edit my avatar, chose glassed click save changes on yellow/orange bit.  Then it says add to favourites, no need to do that..  Please give it one more try!!!

I think you have to add as a favourite once you've decided what you want to put on you avatar.
