  1. It depends on how good your relationship is at the ranch.  The stables where I board charge $300 a month.  But, I started working there 3 days a week for about 5 months before I bought my first horse.  We worked out a deal to board for $150.  A lot of places will trade partial boarding fees for labor.  It takes me about 1 1/2 hours to clean, grain, hay and water a stable with 14 horses.

  2. You might ask them instead of us.  they can tell you if you can work off your boarding fee.

  3. It's possible, why not ask them how much they'd knock off if you work before you set your own price?? They might think your labor is worth more than that. I paid 4o dollars less to do my own stall at one stable I boarded at. I'd GIVE you a stall if you cleaned my 5 in addition to yours. And that's a really good price for board, BTW.

  4. Most places will work with you...Ask them and you will only know then...

  5. You could always call the ranch and ask. I know of barns that will give a discount to boarders if they clean their own stalls and feed their own horses (but they have to buy their own hay). You can try to negotiate a deal with your barn, but know that they have probably worked the board price to reflect cost of hay in the area, plus labor cost and ranch fees.

  6. Oh, so it was YOU who were tying up the phone!  :::Laughing:::

Did you ask them what that was for?  Box stall, pipe stall, pasture?

What did that $180.00/mo include?  Feed (What and how much per feeding) and cleaning?

What facilities do they have?  Arena, round pen, wash rack and hot walker?

  7. Usally they will offer that look around where you live and ask the barn.

  8. You can always ask, but you have to be sure to follow thru. Boarding stables don't make much of a profit and there are liability issues so most don't do the "will work for hay" system. But if you can clean your own horses pen everyday, they may be willing to cut a deal. The other thing you can do is pick up a little side money by doing work for other boarders, blanketing, supplements, turn outs, if the ranch doesn't provide that service and they ok it

  9. They usually do knock off a price if you work for them and if they do lessons and your horse is good enough you could let them use him as a lesson horse sometimes in exchange for a discount.
