Its my first house and I am getting ready to go shopping. What in your opinion is something that you think I will need? Also, what items should I always have on hand just in case?

  1. Thats a broad question.  First you'll need your major appliances:  Icebox, cookstove or microwave.  those are must haves!

You'll need some bathtowels, washclothes, plates, cups, silverware, and cooking utensils.  You may want some curtains/blinds/shades. Id say those are the most important for starting out. Good luck!

  2. The most important thing is a basic box of tools. You'll find yourself needing them as you set up your home and for all the little chores that come up. This link lines it out for you, it's a good shopping list to take to Home Depot!

  3. The absolute most important things to buy are these. A fire alarm for every floor of the house, and if your home is large you will want to consider having even more on each floor. Definitely ones by the kitchen. In my home i have 1600 sq feet and just one floor. I have three of them. (Insurance companies give you discounts or having more than one!). The next most important thing is to have fire extinguishers! You want one for chemical fires, such as in the kitchen, and electrical fires as well. I keep one in each bathroom and a big kind that can handle about anything in my kitchen. (Again, you can get discounts for having them, but you have to tell your insurance company you have them). Renew them as often as it says on the extinguisher.

A first aid kit is also important to have in your home. A rope ladder if your bedrooms are on the second floor in case of fire and needing to escape. Dead bolts for the doors, double keyed so not easily broken into. They can lower the cost of insurance as well. New door locks for every outter door you have. You do not know if anyone kept a key from the last residence! You don't know who they let have a key to get in in emergencies. Be safe, change over every outter lock you have. Change the lock on the door to the house from the garage too. You can get really neat keyless entry locks now a days for those.

these are what i think is most important. Not sure what you were asking for exactly though.

  4. Don't forget window treatments or blinds for your privacy and to keep energy costs low.
