It’s Tricky aims to land her third grade 1 race when she runs in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes
The multiple grade 1 winner and that too back to back, Kiaran McLaughlin's 3-year-old filly, It’s Tricky, will be looking to make it three grade 1 wins in a row by winning the upcoming Grade 1, $500,000 Alabama Stakes at Saratoga on 20 August, 2011.
The back to back grade 1 races have earned the daughter of Mineshaft the title as leader of the 3-year-old filly division.
It's Tricky, out of Cat Boat by Tale of the Cat, won her first Grade 1 race on 11 June, 2011, in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes held at Belmont Park on dirt. The Belmont Park feature race was run over a distance of 1 mile and the filly with her mount, E Castro,
took on the likes of Turbulent Descent and Her Smile.
It was a tough contingent to beat, as the 3-year-old filly held off the pace in the start and outran Her Smile and Turbulent Descent with a furlong to go, downing both of the rival fillies to finish ahead of them and recording her first win in her first
ever Grade 1 race, reaching the wire in 1 minute and 35.48 seconds.
It’s Tricky has always run on dirt throughout her 2-year racing career, and she started on the same surface as the one in her next race, both grade 1 races.
She was pointed towards the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks, run over a distance of 1 1/8 miles, a distance she ran earlier in the year in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Oaks where she finished fourth.
With a quality field to be tackled, It’s Tricky teamed up with her usual jockey, E Castro, at the Saratoga dirt course on 23 July, 2011. The main contenders to win the race were Plum Pretty and Royal Delta.
Both fillies gave It’s Tricky a hard time, but the tactic weren’t so different from the Kiaran McLaughlin filly in the second grade 1 race.
Holding off the pace yet again, E Castro showed It’s Tricky how it feels to linger behind the lot, and she didn’t like it one bit as she spurted past her opponents to catch the leader, Plum Pretty, just ahead of Royal Delta.
It’s Tricky, fully capable of getting rid of her competition, took care of Royal Delta and with longer strides came after Plum Pretty, who surprisingly gave way to a fast and furious It’s Tricky to win her second grade 1 race on the trot.
She will be running against tough competition this time as well, as the Queen’s Plate winner, Inglorious, and the ever improving daughter of Include, St. Johns River, would be posing a major challenge to her.
