It’s Tricky out to make history in the third leg of the Triple Tiara, the Alabama Stakes at Saratoga on 20 August
The daughter of Mineshaft, 3-year-old bay filly, It’s Tricky, is on the verge of pulling off something that hasn’t been done in 18 years and if she is able to do it, the filly will become the seventh horse in history to be able to win the Triple Tiara as
she is eager to land the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes.
The Godolphin owned filly is in pursuit of her third consecutive Grade 1 win for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, as she takes the field for the $500,000, 1 mile and 2 furlongs' third leg of the Triple Tiara on 20 August, 2011, at Saratoga for 3-year-old fillies.
Sky Beauty was the last filly to win all three legs of the Triple Tiara, 17 years back in 1993 by winning the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes, Grade 1 Coaching Club America Oaks and the Grade Alabama Stakes.
The first leg was at Belmont Park on 11 June, 2011, the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes as It’s Tricky took on a field of 6 fillies on dirt.
Under jockey Eddie Castro, the daughter of Mineshaft tracked the leaders and started pressing them 2 ½ furlongs out and then led the lot with 2 furlongs remaining.
Turbulent Descent gave It’s Tricky a hard time and dueled out a hard battle.
It’s Tricky rallied under pressure and steadily drew clear of Turbulent Descent as she defeated her by 3 ¾ lengths.
The second leg of the Triple Tiara was at Saratoga on 23 July, 2011, where the filly participated in the TVG Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks. In the 1 mile and 1 furlong event, It’s Tricky faced four other fillies.
Eddie Castro and It’s Tricky jumped to second position straight away while under pressure from Buster’s Ready right at their heels.
Pressing the leader as per usual from 3 furlongs out with a disputed lead with 2 furlongs to and heading with 1 ½ furlongs to go, It’s Tricky ran under pressure in the final furlong, assuming the lead with just 50 yards to go to keep the awesome Plum Pretty
at bay, winning narrowly by ¾ of a length.
Now to step up to 10 furlongs in the Alabama Stakes shouldn’t be much of a problem for the filly and it is possible that the Alabama Stakes attract the same line up as the Coaching Club American Oaks.
