It’s Tricky retired from racing after incurring injury to her ankle
Godolphin lost one of its most prominent runners in the North American racing circuit, when Kiaran McLaughlin trained 4-year-old filly, It’s Tricky retired because of an injury to her right hind ankle, when the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic bound
filly was preparing for the World Championships on 18 October, 2012, next month at Santa Anita Park.
Announced by McLaughlin on 20 October, 2012, that the filly will no longer race, as she incurred a condylar fracture to the ankle in the process of a bullet five furlong breeze.
Bred in Kentucky by Stonerside Stable, the three time Grade 1 winner was on her way to win the Ladies’ Classic, a race in which she finished second to the eventual three-year-old champion filly, Royal Delta. The two would have been open for a rematch, but
the possibility of one is scratched with It’s Tricky’s retirement.
"She worked well and the next morning when we went to look at her, she had heat and inflammation in her right hind ankle," said McLaughlin. "We had it X-rayed, and forwarded the X-rays to Dr. Larry Bramlage, and both he and Dr. Christian Rhein, who did the
X-rays, agreed it was the beginning of a condylar fracture. No surgery will be required. We just have to stop on her and at this point, she'll go on to her new career as a mother."
The daughter of Mineshaft, out of Tale of the Cat’s mare Catboat, It’s Tricky won the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes and the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks last year, that followed by three consecutive second place finishes in Grade 1 Alabama Stakes, Grade 2
Cotillion Stakes, and Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic.
In her 4-year-old campaign, the filly started brightly with victory in the Grade 2 Top Flight Stakes, Grade 2 Distaff Handicap, and posted her hat-trick and her third Grade 1 victory in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Handicap.
The dark bay filly finished third this year in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes and is currently coming off a second place finish in the Grade 1 Beldame Stakes.
Kiaran McLaughlin said that It’s Tricky will be sent to Lexington in a week’s time, after she won 8 races for her connections and amassed a bankroll of $1,666,500.
