It’s Tricky to lock horns with Awesome Maria in the Ogden Phipps
Though, Kiaran McLaughlin trained It’s Tricky easily won the Grade 2 Distaff Handicap by three and a half lengths, but the Godolphin Racing owned 4-year-old filly showed signs of losing interest and pulling out of the race as if she didn’t want to do what
she was doing, and she was winning.
Jockey Eddie Castro had to come to the rescue and remind the filly with his whip that the race is not over yet, and at the eighth pole there was still some distance to be covered in the seven furlong race at Aqueduct racetrack on 14 March, 2012, when she
defeated C C’s Pal in second and Dontbeshy I’ll Buy in third with the winning time of 1 minute and 22.39 seconds.
Something Kiaran McLaughlin has to instill in his far too consistent filly at this point, but it could be something different, something It’s Tricky done to herself while running in the Grade 2 Distaff Handicap.
However, according to her trainer nothing is wrong with her and she came out fine out of the race, but Kiaran’s heart would have been in his mouth with few strides to go until the wire.
“There was a tiny moment on the turn you thought, ‘Uh-oh, she’s not going to get there,’ ” McLaughlin said. “It was just for five strides you were a little worried. She showed her class and ended up drawing off to win by three. It was asking her to do something
she hadn’t done in a long time – sprint. We made the right decision in staying home.”
The Kentucky bred daughter of Mineshaft, out of mare Catboat by Tale of the Cat, It’s Tricky will make her next start in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps to go underway on 28 May, 2012, at Belmont Park.
The Ogden Phipps will be run over a distance of 1 1/16 miles, and it will be a one turn race which should suit It’s Tricky, but it could get a little tricky for It’s Tricky with Awesome Maria coming into the picture with an aim to defend her title in the
Phipps.
