hey

im going to college this year and its in scotland by the way, im not sure if this yahoo extends to the states, and i was just wondering about bursarys.

i know my education will be payed for but im sure you get a bursary too .. is that right ?

if so how much ? its just that im thinking of renting a flat in the near future and would like to calculate my finances so i can budget.

i have been told only some people get it though. i got the ema [funding through high school] due to my mother being a single parent who earns not alot, and some people have said that makes me a dead cert for bursary ?

what is the most you can get ?

thanks you guys for any help xx

nobody in my family goes to further education so im a fish outta water on this .. plus asking the aquaintances i do know that go to college about there earnings is a bit rude i think .

anyhow thanks again ..

  1. You'll have to look on the college/uni website, or in their leaflet on student finance.

I am going to a college next year onto a foundation degree, and you only get a bursary if you are going into higher education. I think my college gives you £250 if you are already a student at the college and are staying with them to progress onto higher education, and a further £250 if you are in receipt of maintenance grant.

But all colleges may be different, especially since I'm in England and you're in Scotland.

Either way I don't think you can really rely on your college bursary for your income. It's just a little sweetener really.

The things which I have had to look in to include a student loan, maintenance grant OR special support grant (you only get one or the other), and disabled student allowance, if you are ill or disabled in any way.

  2. am confused..are you going to college in Scotland?

  3. contact the college, they will give you the right information you need.

  4. ?

  5. From my experience it depends on what course you are doing and at what level. I would suggest contacting the college, your LEA and student loans (if you're doing a degree). Explain your situation and apply for everything just in case. I know hardship grants and loans are available if you're finding it difficult too. I know some entitlements are based on where you live, for example someone in england may get a different amount than someone in wales studying the same subject. I receive a bursary due to the type of degree I'm doing(one from my Uni and one from the Government), lots of people don't get anything extra though. Good luck, and well done.
